She balled up most of the leaves in one of her handfuls. Then she took a leaf and wiped some of the sap off of her shoe. She then wrapped this sap-covered leaf around the leaf ball. She did the same with her second handful. Soon she had two leaf balls.
Now, how would she hold these in place? She once again took off her jacket. Were there singe marks on it now? She put the leaves in place and then tied the jacket arms tightly under her chin.
Hoping for the best she opened the crate. She then quickly covered her ears over the jacket and the leaves hoping her makeshift earmuffs were enough.
They may not be the most stylish (or pleasantly fragrant) earmuffs, but they look to be able to do the job. That jacket will likely see it's share of sap, but hopefully your hair won't.
As the soundproof box is opened, the mandrake's cries echo down the tunnel - not that you'd hear it - and the slightest visible crack appears in the barrier near the top. It spreads slowly, as the mandrake continues to wail.
