Sorry it's been a while, here's the next part

LE

The next day, I realize that I’ve never been so jealous of Desiree.

Seriously. This is the first time that I’ve wished to have been someone other than me. Every time I look at her, she’s shnoodling with Sirius. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did it on top of a desk in front of Professor McGonagall.

I know I should be happy for my friend. But this is just not one of those times that I’m going to cheer for.

Like now – they’ve been making out for the past ten minutes in this common room, while everyone else is doing homework or socializing. Are they not aware that people don’t like to see their tongues and hands slobbering over each other?

“Lily, what’s wrong?” says Meagan in concern. “You look like you got an Acceptable on your essay.”

Sweet, sweet Meagan. How perfect she would be for Remus. Oh my god, everybody has someone except for me. “I’m just stressed,” I reply, removing the scowl from my face.

“About?”

“Just stuff. Nothing that matters.”

Meagan’s brown eyes peer into mine. After a pause, she says, “You know you can tell me anything, right? There’s no need to hide anything.”

The way she speaks is as though she knows exactly what’s going on through my head everyday when I’m not doing homework or in class. To automatically deny whatever she thinks she knows, I open my mouth, but no words come out. Instead, I nod; Meagan smiles and leaves to go to bed.

Stupid, stupid me. Why can’t I trust my best friends?

“Congratulations, Lily,” says Kate Watson out of the blue with a smirk. “I’m glad you finally came to your senses.” I blink at her, but before I can ask what she’s talking about, she disappears through the portrait hole.

Then later as I get up to go to bed – there is no point staying up unless I want to see more of Sirius and Desiree’s making out – a boy named Lewis Crookbain calls to me suddenly, “Hey, Evans, it’s about time, huh?”

“What are you talking about?” I say.

“Oh my god, she’s denying it,” his friend, Eric Whale, mutters to Lewis, rolling his eyes.

“What’s so bad about him?” says Lewis with a frown. “I mean, you said yes. It kind of means you like him.”

Just as I’m about ask him what in the world he’s blabbering about, Alysha Seater, of all people, taps me on the shoulder, her hand on her hip.

“Uh, hi?” I say. Alysha is one of the girls here at this school who slack off and never study; I’ve only talked to her about four times before.

“I hope you know that you can’t pretend forever,” she says coolly.

“Excuse me?”

“Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. Everyone already knows.”

I just stare at her, speechless. How does she know? How did anyone found out? It makes no sense – the only person I could understand that could know is Meagan, but she doesn’t even know for sure, and she wouldn’t go around telling everyone –

Oh god. And now Alysha is about to curse me because she had been Sirius’s last girlfriend; they broke up in the beginning of July. But why would she be mad – or jealous, even – if she now had a boyfriend in seventh year?

“How do you know?” I say in a low voice, fearful.

She scoffs. “It’s spreading all over the school. Why are you even denying it, anyway? Give the guy a break.”

Wait. What?

“Who are you talking about?” I say, blinking.

“Oh my god,” she rolls her eyes in disbelief, “for a girl that gets an O in every class, you’re pretty stupid. Can you think of one guy who has been in love with you for the whole time they’ve been at Hogwarts? You know, the guy who’s never even looked at a girl other than you?”

Okay. Sirius definitely does not fit into that category.

“There’s no one except James Potter,” I say, confused.

Alysha looks at me like I’m missing the biggest point in the conversation.

“Wait,” I say slowly, the truth finally dawning on me, “you’re talking about Potter? But what am I denying?”

“That you’re his girlfriend now,” Alysha answers simply, rolling her eyes and flipping back her shiny strawberry blonde hair.

My eyes widen. “WHAT? No! No, no, no, no, no. I don’t know where you’re getting this information, but that’s NOT what’s happening. He’s a seriously annoying, arrogant idiot who unfortunately seems to be interested in only me. Where did you get –”

“Listen,” Alysha interrupts, putting a hand on my arm. “I know how you feel. It’s okay not to want everyone to know. In third year, this dork back at home kept asking me out, but I continuously said no, even though I wanted to say yes. I didn’t want people to point and think: What is she doing with that loser? You know what I mean? But James isn’t a loser. You shouldn’t be afraid to let people know. He’s the most popular guy in our year, with Sirius Black. That’s all I’m saying, because he’s really happy about it – he’s been telling everyone– and I don’t think you should hurt his feelings. Goodnight, Lily.”

She walks away, leaving me speechless and dumbfounded. Her voice echoes in my head: He’s been telling everyone.

I stare at Lily as she approaches me, looking murderous. “Where the hell is James Potter?” she demands.

“On the Quidditch field with Peter, I think,” I reply quickly, as she looks as though she’s about to explode any second. “Don’t –”

Before I can finish, however, she stomps away and climbs out of the portrait hole, looking ready to kill.

“What the hell was that about?” says Desiree. “Lily didn’t actually say yes to him, did she?”

“No,” I shake my head rapidly. “This is just James being stupid. He thinks if he tells people that they’re finally going out, she’ll come to her senses or some crap.”

“Then shouldn’t you tell people that he’s lying?”

“No. I want him to learn his lesson, because he can get awfully delusional sometimes.”

“You do realize that Lily is going to murder your best friend.”

“I know. He probably deserves it.”

Desiree laughs lightly, and moves away from my lap, where she had been playing with my hair. “You’re so nice.”

“He’s a guy. He can take it,” I answer, reaching for her; she shakes her head playfully and stands up.

“I’ll wait for her in the dormitory. Meagan and I will be able to calm her down, hopefully.”

She gives me a quick kiss, but I want more, holding onto her arm. She giggles, kissing me twice, and scurries away. I watch her with amusement.

It proves that I like Desiree. Not Lily.

When I glance at the window, I spot a silhouette of James, flying on his broomstick. Then he stops, and flies toward the ground, landing. Smirking, I get up to watch. Remus would hate to have missed this. But, as usual, he’s in the library.

Sure enough, Lily has arrived, Peter standing beside her awkwardly, as he clearly has no idea what’s going on. I can just make out James’s grin, which vanishes as Lily shouts something; even from this distance I can see her face reddening fast. As she continues to scream, he tries to say something, but fails. Then, after slapping him in the face, Lily waves her wand abruptly, nearly poking Peter’s eye out in the process.

Suddenly, James disappears; Peter, frantic, says something to Lily, who merely stomps away. I watch as Peter just stands there, staring at something on the ground intently, not knowing what to do.

I should help. But I won’t; he deserves it for doing that to Lily.

Oh god. Why do I even care what happens to her?

I calmly wait until she comes back to the common room. When she does, still fuming, she yells to the room, “People! I am not going out with James Potter, and I never will.”

I fight the urge to laugh, because I’ve never seen her like this.

“Don’t believe a thing his blabbering, fat mouth says, because EVERYTHING IS UNTRUE.” Then she begins to walk away as people look at her curiously, and I quickly get up to stop her.

“What did you do to James?”

“What do you care?” she snaps, trying to get past me.

“I’m asking because I’m curious. Chill out.”

She looks at me, her green eyes burning. “I turned him into an ant. That way, I hope he gets stepped on and dies.”

Taken aback, I stare at her as she pushes past me and leaves for her dormitory.

Okay. The last part was a lie. I don’t really want Potter to die. But really, if he did, I wouldn’t mind too much.

Immediately when I enter the dormitory, Desiree and Meagan hurry up to me. “What the hell did you do to James?” Desiree demands frantically. “I could make him out flying around, then you suddenly show up, and he disappears! Where did you send him? What did you do?”

“Nothing that will harm his health,” I reply calmly. “I turned him into an ant. Big deal.”

Desiree bursts out laughing, but stops when Meagan gives her a look. “What if someone steps on him?” asks Meagan, worrying.

“Then the world would have gotten a whole lot better.”

Meagan gives me the same look. “You need to tell Sirius or Remus. They’ll be able to turn him back. You left him with Peter, right? Peter won’t have a clue.”

“I already told Sirius. I expect he’ll turn him back soon.”

We all stare at each other.

“Of all things you could have turned him into…!” Desiree blurts out, shaking her head, but her eyes are playful. Meagan even smirks.

“He’ll be fine,” I assure, “unless his fat head is too heavy for him to carry.”

Laughing, we climb into bed; I’m prepared to drift off to Lilyland when Desiree suddenly sits up. “Hey, Lily, remember how the Charms textbooks were sold out in Diagon Alley, and how we’re supposed to order one by Owl Order? Isn’t the deadline tomorrow?”

“Oh, no,” I groan, getting up lazily. “I better go to the Owlery. I could order yours too, if you want.”

“That would be the best. I am way too tired to go all the way over there, especially having to sneak around, trying not to get caught. Thanks a bunch, Lil.”
