Tying one converse covered foot he turned to the other one. He tied the white shoelaces to the blue converse and began to stand up. His attention was averted to a shiny purple bell. He crawled over the stone floor of the corridor to the bell and sat there. He picked it up and held it up in the light and gave it a little shake.
"N-n-nice!" Preston smiled, thinking it looked like a cat bell for a cat, perfect accessory for Ringo his pet raccoon who just happened to act like a cat. Preston sat there in the middle of the corridor playing with the purple bell without a care in the world.
Seventy-five...seventy-six...seventy-seven... Ari knew that it was ninety-one steps to the end of the corridor, then a hundred more to the birch tree, and she knew this so well that she brought her red-tipped cane merely to check her path, although, today, she was able to get on without it.
She heard the faint tinkling of a bell--but it was muffled. Someone was holding it--it wasn't hanging from anything. At eighty paces, she stopped, and held the cane parallel to herself. Whoever it was was on the ground...or else were standing in a huge hole in the ground--not likely. She pressed her glasses close to her eyes and cleared her throat.
"Pardon me?"
