It would be that we're all OK
And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these I won't be made useless
I won't be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear
My hands are small, I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken ~Hands by Jewel The boys turned around startled, expecting that they’d be in the common room alone. They were surprised to see the shrugging, sheepish grinning figure of Neville Longbottom standing there in pajamas with little toads floating on lily pads.
“Neville, what are you doing up so late?” Harry asked, his tone as accusatory as Professor Snape‘s usually was when questioning Harry‘s escapades.
“I suppose I could ask you the same thing, no?” the boy asked matter of factly.
Nicholas stood up, “Now look here mate, I don’t know what you think you’re doing but Harry and I’ve got some private matters to talk about …”
Neville’s face quickly became one of scowling trepidation. Still he made no move to back down despite the other boy’s taller size and build.
“It’s all right Nicholas, Neville was part of the army. And he’s a close friend. I trust him completely.” Those words warmed Neville’s heart, but while he smiled sheepishly at Harry when he turned to look back at Nicholas his face was still one of guarded regard.
“That may be as it is.” Nicholas sighed, “You vouch for him?” his tone changed.
Harry nodded.
“All right then. Now what’s this room you’re talking about, then.” And the boys settled down to talk.
Their plans would proceed well into the morning, though Harry’s heart ached for the absence of his two best mates. Where were Ron and Hermione now? He hadn’t hear anything about either of them, which likely meant that Hermione was still in a coma at St. Mungo’s and Ron was still at her bedside unless his family had managed to pry him away long enough.
Nicholas for his part felt cross at Lupin for trying to keep him from coming to Hogwarts, and for not dropping him off at the school. It was Tonks who had left him off and the two had not parted on the best of terms.
As for Neville, the boy was happy to once again be a part of something that helped fight the war. Children younger than they were had died in other fights, and in times of great need sacrifices must always be made and everyone must be called upon to serve.
“What about this crazy friend of yours, the one Lupin was always talking about, Ottery?” Nicholas asked. “Do you think he’d like to join our group?”
Harry sighed and said nothing. Nicholas had not been on the train and so knew nothing of the events that transpired on it or afterwards except what the news had chosen to carry.
“He’s in Azkaban,” Neville replied. “We think.”
“You can’t be certain with the Ministry running The Daily Prophet now,” Harry interjected. The thought of Ottery in some dank cellar in some Ministry rat house being tortured for information had crossed his mind a time or two. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t put past Scrimgeour. I'm so cool I'll make it a double post What's the sense in sharing this one and only life
Ending up, just another lost and lonely wife
You count up the years, and they will be filled with tears,
Love only breaks up, to start over again
You'll get the babies, but you won't have your man
While he is busy loving every woman that he can,
Say I wanna leave a thousand times a day
It's easier said that done, when I just can't break away
Just can't break away Young hearts, run free
Never be hung up, hung up like my man and me
~Young hearts run free by Candi Station “It’s quiet,” Tiffany pointed out to the boys.
“A little too quiet,” Ottery added.
“That’s because they’re planning their next attack,” Teddy interjected, smacking the boy on the back of the head. “Right about now I’d be loading a cart full of explosives and I’d be sending it down the hallway.”
“What about the other prisoners?” Tiffany asked, “The ones in all the rooms in the hall?”
“What about them?” Teddy asked.
Then the silence broken suddenly by the emergence of Rufus Scrimgeour.
“Ottery, it’s me Rufus. Am I correct in assuming that’s your friend Teddy D. Bear?”
“Why don’t you come and find out for yourself, minister?” Teddy shot back as he rolled a small black ball with a lit fuse down the hall.
The minister did not move.
“Is this really how you mean for it to go down?” the man asked.
“Teddy, seriously!” Ottery exclaimed. Diego shushed him. “What? You’re not going to tell me you agree with him, do you?” Diego pointed to the ground, dropped down to his knees and listened through the stone.
“It’s a trap! He’s distracting us, they mean to attack from below!” Diego exclaimed.
“Why that dirty low down good for nothing …” Teddy started throwing lit bombs down the hallway as fast as he could light them, with Tiffany helping.
Diego pushed out the two aurors, who promptly ran screaming down the hall followed by bombs, even as Scrimgeour stood his ground a smirk on his face.
“You would have been a beautiful mystery to solve, boy. But right now I’ve got a war to worry about.” Ottery nodded to the older man.
“How gracious of you to accept defeat.”
“I concede nothing!” Scrimgeour replied, “I’m just sorry I don’t have the time or resources to waste on you and your little enclave. Kill them all!”
With a wave of his hand the minister sent a gush of wind blowing and all the fuses on the bombs went out. There was an explosion and dust and rocks flying everywhere again as a large hole in the floor of Ottery’s cell appeared.
Diego spun in a circle and waved his wand sending a gust of wind blowing all the dust and rocks out the window of the cell. Ottery and Tiffany and Teddy were pointing their wands at a dozen aurors. Teddy smiled as he heard footsteps in the hallway.
“I guess they don’t know about Teddy’s trick fuses do they? Go out and light right back--” Ottery did not finish the sentence as the aurors started firing spells and the hallway exploded in a vicious shower of violence.
