And then he waited.

Just as he'd expected, a thick grin mist began to emit from the object. "The Fourfoil responds to objects that have had magic cast upon them," he explaned through the green fog with a few blinks. With a wave of his wand, manakins appeared on the desks infront of all the students and Sage moved around the room to hand them all a few stalks of the herb. "Give it a go yourself. Furnuculus is actually a curse, and so the mist appears green. Hexes will emit a yellow mist, jinxes are red.. and charms will turn the mist blue."

Hmm. Maybe he hadn't thought this through. The classroom would be a rainbow fog.
Oh! Her answer had definitely been one of the most correct ones. Surprise, surprise. Gold took a few, quick notes, before setting her notebook aside to listen to Professor Dodson. Good gosh, if what he was saying was right - which Gold had no doubt about - the greenhouse was going to be full of colourful fog, within another five minutes!

That would actually be quite pretty.

Sage gave his beard a scratch. Histedius? "Histedius is used to cause discomfort for more ... malicious reasons," he said slowly, "therefore I'd class it more as a hex." But that was just him. "Give it a go and see what the Fourfoil classes it as."
"Doesn't it depend upon one's intentions though, sir?" Gold asked, raising a hand. "One could use it as a jinx, or one could use it as a hex... and there are lots of other spells that can fall into more than one category, based on how one executes them, sir." Sooo, could the Fourfoil pick up what the caster's state of mind had been?

She paused for a moment, thinking of that, and then added rather thoughtfully, "Does the Fourfoil emit a specific type of mist if a spell doesn't fall into any of those categories, sir?" Professor Dodson hadn't mentioned transfigurational magic, so far. It wasn't charmwork.

It was like the Fluffletuff Bloom and half-truths and all that stuff, all over again. Only, this time time Gold had even more questions. She took a few more notes, before reaching out for mortar-and-pestle, and beginning to grind the Fourfoil. It didn't take too long, of course; and, the moment Gold was done, she set it aside, ready to cast on the mannequin in front of her. What to cast though, was the question.

Lots to consider!
