He let the question and the look hang there for a moment, before turning his attention to Mister Phillips, with a much lighter tone and expression. "It is indeed fascinating magic, as Mister Lycaon said. And yes, historically, we know students have become animagi during their tenure here." Preston paused, his features becoming serious. "However, they did so quite illegally and irresponsibly." He raised an eyebrow, searching their features for any indication that they were intent on pursing this in such a foolhardy way.
Leaning back and once more taking his tea, Preston continued, a much friendlier expression now on his face. "Yes, it is quite advanced magic, and yes, you don't choose what you turn into, much like you do not control the shape your patronus takes." Preston raised an eyebrow at the boy who seemed intent on expressing his displeasure with Mister Upstead in not-so-subtle ways.
"Is your interest purely theoretical? Or do you have lofty aspirations for once you are older?"
"No thank you, sir, I'm fine really," Rafe said declining a glass of water. He closed his eyes for a quick moment and thought of happy, pleasant thoughts, and that seemed to put his mind at ease for now. There was no need to blow up right in the middle of this professor's office.
Rafe listened as the professor continued talking of animagi and how it was illegal and irresponsible...blah, blah, blah...A little twitch of a grin in the corned of his mouth slightly formed. "Of course, theoretical," Rafe nodded.
"How does it effect a person genetically? If a person had traces of, let's say veela blood, would it cause problems for such a transformation? Could it influence how their mind worked differently?"
Rafe watched as Jake, Cela and that new girl, he'd never seen before leave. Then another two entered. He'd just have to keep an eye out for Jake. Transfiguration definitely seemed a popular subject. But, Rafe was more concerned with a particular branch of it, and not just how it worked for animagi.
