Dang it. He already laughed and he hadn't even started the joke yet.

He waited for a second.
"You can't yell at me for something I didn't do!" he said. He laughed again. That was a good joke.
"You've got to tell me the joke before you laugh," Ella said with a silly giggle. Carter hadn't even said anything and then he laughed.

"What?" Ella asked.
Then came the punchline. Ella laughed.
"OHHHHHH." She hadn't heard that one before.
"Okay. So do you think you can handle when.. I'm not sure.. if you can handle just jokes?" Ella asked with a teasing smile.
