He wanted to be tough again but seeing her and realizing he wasn't going to see her for a whole year upset him. Nate gently pulled her hand from his face and just held it in his. "I'm really am going to miss you. I still love you, you know."
As Nate held her hand, Cadence played with his fingers absentmindedly as she listened to him talk.
"I think... it's better this way, Nate. Us not being together while you're away. Because at least this way it... it ended on good terms and there's still that chance of getting back together in the future. If we were apart and something happened and we broke up, it would be a lot harder. I think I'd be a lot more hurt, and I don't think we'd have that chance of something in the future," she said honestly. It was true, that was how she felt. That it was better to do this now rather than finding out through a letter that there was some girl near his house that he started to like and so he was going to break up with Cadence. She couldn't have forgiven him for that.
"I know you're..." she began, but before she could finish, he said the L-word and her heart practically stopped as her breath caught in her chest. She wasn't going to cry. Nate needed her to be strong, and he needed to see that she was okay. She was okay... until he went and said he loved her.
"I-I know you do. And I still love you. And I always will. Even if we never get back together or even if we get back together and break up again, a part of me will always love you. You're always going to have a piece of my heart, Nate. Always."
