Time for the new post!
“Alright, well I told Remus I’d meet him after breakfast, so I’d better go. I’ll catch up with you later I guess,” said Emily. She waved slightly as she got up from the table.
Emily made her way down to Remus’ classroom, where they would be practicing. She knocked gently on the door and entered.
“Hey, Rems, you ready?” she asked him.
“Yep, have you been thinking of what happy thought you were going to use?” he asked her.
“Yes, I think I’ve thought of one,” she replied. She had been thinking of what happy thought she would use ever since he had agreed to teach her the night before. She thought of how happy she was when she was an animagus, how happy she was when she was with her friends, how happy she had been with Draco, and how happy she was when she flew on a broom. Then, she thought of the first night she read her father’s journal. She thought about when she first read his entry from March 4, 1979. She thought about how much he truly loved her. It was one of the happiest memories she’s ever had.
“Are you ready?” Emily nodded.
“Do you remember the spell?”
She nodded again and whispered,
“Expecto Patronum.” “That’s right. Now, think of your happy memory,” he whispered.
“Let it fill you up and take over your every emotion.”
Emily nodded and closed her eyes. She felt purely blissful, like nothing could touch her. She thought about how she smiled when she read his enthusiasm. She thought about how she laughed at his pranks. She thought about how she cried when she read how in love he was with her mother. And she thought about how she did all three of those actions when she read about the day she was born.
“Wait. Maybe you’re not ready for this yet, Ems. I think we should try something else first. I think we should overcome your boggart phobia,” Remus said. Breaking out of her reverie, Emily looked at him like a deer in headlights.
“I thought you were teaching me the patronus charm?” she asked cautiously.
“I am, but you still won’t go near a boggart ever since the last time. Not even in class. Honestly, Ems, if you can’t get rid of a boggart, I don’t think you’ll be able to do the patronus charm.”
“Ugh! Fine, I’ll do it, but then can we get back to Dementors?” Remus nodded.
“What was the point of getting me all prepped to fight a Dementor, when you were just going to through boggarts at me?” she asked.
“I thought you liked surprises,” he chuckled. Emily glared daggers at him and he stopped laughing.
“Alright, are you ready?” She nodded so he proceeded.
Remus opened the trunk that held the boggart from their first lesson with his wand out just incase he needed to take over. Emily’s eyes snapped open at the sound of the latch being undone. Her wand was pointed outward toward the unknown. The last time she had tried facing a boggart was last year over one of her holidays. Remus and her always had their mini lessons. Last time, the boggart turned into complete darkness. It engulfed her and she was defeated. Their lessons stopped immediately. Remus had assumed that she was just afraid of the dark, but it was really the unknown. She was scared of not knowing what might come next or what really was. She wasn’t sure if that’s what it would be this time.
Ever so slowly a body ascended from the trunk. Emily wasn’t sure of what to expect. It was definitely male that was for sure. The man looked familiar to Emily. He had filthy, tangled hair that hung down to his shoulders. He had deep circles under his eyes and his skin was stretched ever so tightly around the bones of his face. His yellow teeth were visible through his mad, barking laugh. It was the man from the posters; it was Sirius Black. But it wasn’t the Sirius Black she knew was innocent; it was the Sirius Black everyone knew as a murderer, the one everyone made into a murderer. It was her nightmare. Emily’s wand dropped from her fingertips as she stared at her father. They were in the same room for the first time Emily could ever remember. He started advancing on her, but Remus ran in front of her. There was a loud pop before the boggart Sirius turned into the full moon.
“Riddikulus!” Remus shouted. The boggart turned into a balloon and Remus sent it back into the trunk. He stared at the trunk a moment longer before turning around. Her eyes were large and she was still staring at the spot where her father had disappeared. Her wand was still lying where she had dropped it, and she was shaking slightly. Remus, open-mouthed, stared at her, not sure of what to say.
“Emily, what...why was...?” Remus couldn’t get any words out that made sense. Emily, remembering he was there, looked up at him while a tear escaped from her eye. She wasn’t able to respond. She slowly bent down and picked up her wand.
“Sorry,” Emily whispered. She turned on her heel and ran to her dormitory.
She was thankful that nobody was in the common room so she wouldn’t have to answer any unwelcome questions. She sat on the edge of her bed, her forehead in her hands, staring at the ground. It was way too quiet for her. And still. Letting out a huge gust of air, Emily got off her bed and went to her closet. She pushed aside her clothes and found her broom. It was a Nimbus 2001, a Christmas present from last year. Taking hold of it, she set off downstairs.
