Chapter 6 - The Snow Part 2

The snow had been falling all night and continued to fall while Cassie walked. She walked looking at the flowers covered in snow whose petals struggling to find sun. She crossed a bridge that spanned a stream that still flowed with bubbling water. Cassie decided to fallow the stream until she found the pond she saw outside the conservatory the first time she ate there. Although she knew that she would not see the peacocks that she remembered that day.

When she came to the pond it was covered in a veil of ice and the peacocks were gone. She stood there looking at the conservatory that she had eaten in every morning this time she truly felt like the outsider. Bending down she gathered snow into a ball and watched it having nothing to throw it at she dropped it on the ground. She had never felt so alone as she did now.

When she looked up she noticed that Draco was standing in the conservatory talking to his father Lucius. She turned and started to walk towards the gate of the Manor Garden hoping he did not see her looking at him.

As she walked she saw a stone pathway that lead to a massive oak tree that had a large swing hanging from its branches. She brushed the snow from it and sat down looking out towards the gate. The swing was so large it could have fit a whole other person on it comfortably. She swung watching snow fall from the great oak tree for what seemed an hour. The silence was restful and the swinging was comforting.

Cassie turned just as Draco came near to the oak tree.

“I Use to come out here as a child and swing on that but I would jump off when I was high enough in the air.” he came so she did not have to turn her neck to see him. Pointing at a stone bench he added “ once when I was ten I soared off the swing and hit my arm on that bench breaking it. But I learned a valuable lesson that day.”

“what don’t jump off of swings” Cassie mocked

“No a wizard should not want to hard because he might get what he wants and get hurt. “He paused with a smile knowing he had a captive audience. “That was one of the first spells I ever did a high jump spell.” Draco added with a smile

“May I join you? “ Draco asked walking around the swing pushing her slightly causing the swing to sway.

Cassie moved so he could sit down. He sat facing the opposite direction of her so he faced her. She bit her lip and looked away towards the ground with a stray hair falling in her eyes.

Draco watched as Cassie pushed the strand behind her ears. “ Your father said you were in London” she said trying to find a safe subject to discuss.

“Yes I was I will be returning tomorrow morning” Draco replied with a straight face. The swing began to sway slightly as he swung his legs.

Glancing at him Cassie replied “ So soon you just got here”

“Your father has a task for me to complete tomorrow.” Draco’s gray eyes caught Cassie’s “ Cassandra don’t worry your self about it.”

“My father” Cassie spat harshly “ Draco why do you do what he tells you?”

Draco was taken by her forceful tone however he calmly replied “His mercy is what allows me my life”

“So winning his favor has nothing to do with it?”

“Favor? Cassandra. Why would you ask that?” Draco questioned

Cassie was surprised by how angry she was about being used as a prize for her father’s needs. “ My father” she added a venomous tone on the word “He wishes me to be a prize to whoever is most eager to win his favor. Why should you be any different/” She quickly rose from the swing stopping a moment to turn and add “Which do you want more me or my father?” with that she turned to walk away.

Draco sat in awe of what he heard. Cassie stormed off toward the manor when her foot hit an ice patch sending her falling flat on her rear. Draco quickly to her side.

“I cant even storm off without hurting myself” Cassie cried tears of pain. “I hate him so much. Why cant I have a normal life with normal problems.” her eyes were red and blotchy as she hung her head hair going in every direction. “And now I look like a fool sitting in the snow crying.” Tears fell to the snow creating small dots where they landed.

“Come now Cassandra” Draco said while straighting her hair. He ran his thumb under her eyes sweeping the tears away. “you have been through a lot you have every right to be angry and to cry.” He repositioned himself to be more comfortable. “ I will sit with you as long as you like”

They sat on the snow in silence until Cassie stopped crying. She turned to face Draco and her nose brushed his. He held her chin as he bent to kiss her.

Draco turned red in the face he stood up holding his hand out for her. “ I’m sorry we really should not have done that.”

Cassie stood rubbing her hip balancing herself with his outstretched arm. “My father..” She trailed off knowing he would understand.

“He has not granted me any favor to be with you we would be braking his rule.” He bent down and kissed her again “we should just go inside and forget this happened” he said as he kissed her forehead.

Cassie and Draco moved away form each other and walked to the manor in silence with smiles on their faces.
