She raised her hand again, when he asked a question. "Professor, a second is basically a representative of a party in a duel," she said quietly. "Someone that party really trusts. The seconds settle the time and place of the duel, and check the wands, to ensure fair play."

"So.... a second makes sure that rules are followed, in the course of a duel. Steps in to continue the duel, too, when the party he or she represents, is killed, or no longer able to duel."
