She was surprised when Ivory decided to just go ahead and freeze the birds. Most people she knew tried to knock them down and, well, that was exactly where they failed. You couldn't really slow down so many birds. So yes, Ivory's move had been clever.
But then she couldn't exactly see clearly and... oh, there they were, Ivory's shoes. But, wait a second, they didn't seem to have legs! Gold peered, confused at this sudden turn of events, and then she felt a whoosh of air, and knew Ivory had used those shoes as a distraction. That had worked, too! Totally surprised her.
Her shield charm had already been drawn up, though, which was the sole reason the Trip Jinx did not make her, well, trip. Fall flat on her face, or something. Because those clone shoes had done quite a wonderful job of confusing her. Bad, distracting shoes! Even though they were quite pretty, you know.
Yes, Gold had time to examine shoes, even during the midst of a duel. Because nice shoes were love. LOVE.
She pointed her wand to Ivory's right, and concentrated on sparks. Big, really bright sparks. They streamed out of the tip of her wand pretty much at once, blindingly and brightly coloured, and rather distracting. Hopefully, that would take Ivory's attention from her, for a second or half, and make the next spell she cast, go unnoticed.
"Rictusempra!"
... and then, of course, she drew up her shield again. If there was one thing you couldn't let go of, in a duel, it was your shield. It really was your best friend, in such a situation. With her shield still up, Ivory glanced this way and that through the birds, trying to see what was happening when suddenly there were sparks from somewhere to her right. Big bright sparks that made her intention waver and her shield flicker uncertainly. Oooh pretty sparks...
The younger more naive part of her wanted to turn and look at the brightly colored spectacle that reminded her of fireworks but as she was just about to turn when immediately a light bulb went off in her head. She herself had just used the shoes as a distraction so maybe....
The split second dodge saved her from the Tickling Charm and from her now crouched position she watched wide-eyed as the flash of light that indicated the spell hit one of the suspended blue birds straight on its feathered breast.
Oh no! Her mind immediately went blank with worry for the bird until she remembered what it had been hit with.
Watching it intently, she saw as the bird regained its mobility and began flying in random patterns and ....laughing?
A funny chirping sound that was very similar to that of a squeaky toy being squeezed was heard again and again as the bird flew in swoops and dives, it's little chipmunk laugh echoing through the arena.
Giggling in spite of herself, the laughter suddenly caught in a knot in her throat.
As if in result to one of their fellow birds being unfrozen, suddenly the effects of her earlier 'Immobulus' spell wore off and all the birds became instantly unfrozen.
Concentrating her intent on her shield, she clamped her eyes shut and waited for the attack...Her fear was palpable thing as she imagined her shield eventually wearing down and the bird upon bird pecking her to a slow painful death. Yeah she probably was exaggerating but in her eleven year old mind death was imminent and she waited fearfully....and waited ... and waited.
Opening one eye only she looked around and then opened both and blinked. Eventually, she released a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, the spell seemed to have at least worked in that it had immobilized their intent to attack so the current result was just many many blue birds flying around in circles around Ivory aimlessly as one of them squeaked in uncontrollable laughter.
Vowing to help the poor bird out later, she tried to find a good stance again with her still intact but almost flickering shield.
Her mind jumped from idea to idea...what could she do...what could she do.
She didn't know that many spells but she was smart enough to know that one worked with what they had including their environment. In this case, everything around her side of the arena was a whirl of flapping wings and chirping and squeaky alughter.
Praying that it would work, she brought her wand up and yelled "Protego"! as loud as she could hoping Gold would hear while thinking of confusion, bewilderment, uncertainty, befuddlement, and just plain being lost.
As quietly as she could she aimed her wand through split second gap between the birds and pronounced the incantation that had been her downfall last time as quietly as she could not knowing if Muffliato was in effect since she hadn't seen it bounce off. "Confundo"
Crouching down again, she kept her feet moving hoping she'd be able to dodge in either direction if she saw the tell tale flash of light that indicated a spell having been cast. |
