Rafe had a very, very confused look on his face. "Whoa! What?! You're heart is telling you not to be with Carter? That doesn't make any sense... I mean, I've only seen you a couple of times together, but from what I gathered you two always looked happy." Rafe didn't understand, he was overwhelmed with emotion. On on hand he was elated that she didn't love Carter and it gave him a chance, on the the other hand he knew how much Carter cared for Marilyn and knew ultimately it would hurth them both to break up. Wait a sec, did she say someone else?, he thought. He didn't want to get his hopes up.
"Marilyn, if you don't like Carter in that way, you should tell him, it's not fair to let this continue on because it's only going to get harder as time goes on," Rafe stared at his feet. "However..." Rafe took in a deep breath, "Well, there isn't a however, you said it yourself, if you listened to your heart it's telling you that you and Carter shouldn't be together! Why put yourself through this? Why put Carter through this?" Why put him through this?
Marilyn bit her lip and sat down beside Rafe again.
"Please understand how Im feeling...I do like Carter. He's an amazing guy and I do have a great time with him. But I do not love him...and my heart tells me my feelings will never progress to love." It hurt to say it...but it was the truth. She turned to Rafe helplessly, a sad smile on her face.
"And yes, I did say someone else...but It's complicated." Rafe had to know who she was talking about...If he didn't, he really didn't know her.
Her frustration spiked.
"I know I should tell him!" She couldn't help it as her voice rose an octave.
"I can't hurt him like that. I might not love him like I love..." She closed her eyes and turned away.
"It doesn't matter. Heat was rising up in cheeks. She felt both nervous and slightly embarrassed. Why was this so difficult for her?
"I do care about him. He's such caring guy. How am I suppose to hurt him like this?"
