"Kellen Stern."

He gave Chaucer a nervous glance and walked up the stairs to the sorting hat, glad there were so many other transfer students. For half the summer he'd been worried about standing in a group of first years, a good head taller than any of them, waiting for his name to be called.

The hat was set on his head, and he sat there tapping his thighs absentmindedly with his forefingers. He and Chaucer had agreed on how to rig the hat: sit on the stool and repeat Slytherin over and over in your head, thinking thoughts of ambition and kicking puppies. Then he recalled the words of his father: Think nothing at all. The hat knows what it's doing. It puts you into a house that will help you grow, not keep you where you are.

So he sat there with a blank mind for what seemed like forever, even though it was probably only a quarter of a minute, until finally the hat shouted, "Ravenclaw!"

"Oh." Well that hadn't been his first or second choice, had it? He slid off the stool once the teacher removed the hat and headed down the stairs to the Ravenclaw table, trying to decide what it was that made the hat place him here.

Finally he shrugged; I'll find out eventually.
