Chapter 29 part 1
“So? How are things going?” Luna asked Ginny as she joined Hermione, Molly and herself at the living room at the Potter residence.
Ginny had returned home with the new member of their family two days before Christmas. During Christmas day the entire Weasley family with all of their kids had come by to see the baby, so the house was something more than overcrowded. Three days after Christmas and the house was still a bit untidy because Ginny was busy with the baby and Hermione was busy with the Auror office and the guys…well they were guys. Thankfully, Molly dropped by this morning to see Hope again and decided to ‘fix the destruction’ as she said. Luna came later the same day to see them but as Ginny sat next to her on the couch she appeared to be a bit irritated.
“Oh, everything is great”, Ginny said.
“Then why do you look peeved?” Luna asked her friend.
“I’m not peeved”.
“She is”, Hermione chuckled. “It’s because most of the times she can’t make the baby stop crying and Harry can”.
“It’s not fair!” Ginny snapped crossing her hands to her chest. “I was the one carrying her around for nine months and she likes her father better!”
“Oh, come on honey”, Molly smiled as Luna and Hermione chuckled under Ginny’s murderous gaze. “It’s not that she likes him better, he probably just has more patience than you do”.
“My husband? Patience?” Ginny said raising her eyebrows. “Mum, do you don’t know Harry?”
“I still don’t get why you are so irritated by this though, Gin”, Hermione said. “Ron was good in making Hugo calm down when he was little too”.
“Yeah, I know…it’s just…like it wasn’t enough that Lily is like thirteen years old and still calls Harry ‘daddy’, now our other daughter will stop crying the minute he enters the room!” Ginny grunted. “How she knows it every time; whether he’s around or not, I’ll never know!”
“I think Mrs. Potter is jealous that the other Misses Potters are in love with Mr. Potter too”, Luna said and Hermione and Molly laughed.
“Oh, shut up!” Ginny said half laughing herself. “Anyway”, she went on looking at the clock, “I thought Neville was coming around too tonight. Where is he? He’s gonna miss dinner”.
“He’ll come”, Hermione nodded. “Oh, by the way he said that a cousin of his might be coming along”.
“What?” Hugo exclaimed from the end of the stairs. Rose and Albus who stood next to him had bewildered faces just like he did.
“What?” Hermione asked back.
“Professor Jenks will come for lunch?” Rose asked.
“Who’s Professor Jenks?” Ginny asked confused.
“She’s our new Quidditch professor”, Albus explained sitting next to his mother. “She’s also Neville’s cousin”.
“Oh, mum, that sucks!” Hugo complained to Hermione. “We can’t have a teacher home for lunch! It’s weird!”
“But I thought Neville was your professor too and he’s around all the time and you don’t think it’s weird”, Molly pointed out.
“Neville doesn’t count”, Albus said rolling his eyes at his grandmother. “Neville is like the uncle we get to take with us back to school”.
“I didn’t know that he had a cousin though”, Ginny said. “Did his parents have any siblings?”
“Yeah, don’t you remember him talking about that uncle of his who held him out of the window from the ankle and then…”
“…and then dropped him but then Neville managed to land on the pavement with no harm and then they knew he had magical powers and he would go to Hogwarts”, Hermione finished Luna’s sentence.
“Right”, Ginny nodded. “Forgot about that”.
“I’m sure Neville hasn’t!” Hugo chuckled.
“Be nice”, his mother told him. “Anyway how come you never talked about that new professor of yours in your letters?”
“I think I said something to dad”, Albus said. “Yeah, I must have mentioned to him that there’s a new professor that James doesn’t like at all”.
“Who don’t I like?” James asked walking into the room. “That is besides you Al”.
“Ha ha”, Albus said ironically. “Professor Jenks; she’s coming over with Neville for lunch”.
James stopped at his tracks. His face became frozen at once.
“She’s coming here?” he asked.
“Yeah, why?” Ginny asked. James seemed unable to respond for a few seconds then he gulped and looked at his mother.
“I just think she’s way too arrogant and stubborn for my liking”, he said.
“You don’t like her because she’s arrogant and stubborn? You? You, who are the very synonym of arrogance and stubbornness, don’t like her for that?”
“Thanks mum”, James sighed.
“He just don’t like her because she wouldn’t let him quit the Quidditch team and when he did anyway she went to complain to the Headmistress”, Albus said.
“What? When did that happen?” Ginny asked.
“It did”, James grunted. “And I think she should mind her own business and leave me alone”.
“But…” Ginny started to say but then a loud bang came from the kitchen. They all jumped and Hermione pulled her wand out but then Teddy walked into the living room covered in dust.
“I’m so sorry Ginny”, he said coughing. “I apparated right upon your china cabinet”.
“WHAT?” Ginny exclaimed.
“Don’t worry I fixed everything”.
“Never mind that”, she said walking to him. “Are you okay?”
“Oh, yeah I’m fine I just lost my balance that’s all”, Teddy shrugged as Harry came down the stairs.
“What happened?”
“Teddy hasn’t learn how to apparate yet”, James laughed.
“I know how to apparate James, thank you very much”, Teddy said. “I just miscalculated”, he shrugged as Ginny was patting the dust away from him. “Anyway….Merry Christmas everyone!” he added and Ginny hugged him.
“Merry Christmas Ted”, Harry smiled and hugged him too.
“Sorry I couldn’t make it for Christmas Day”, Teddy said. “Gran was a bit tired and we couldn’t come”.
“How’s Andromeda doing?” Molly asked.
“Not so good”, Teddy shrugged. “But hopefully she’ll bounce up”.
“Yeah, I’m sure she’ll be fine” Harry nodded hugging his godson’s shoulders.
“Why can’t you and your grandmother come live with us?” Albus asked Teddy. “I mean you were living with us before she got ill, why…?”
“Because Gran is a bit weird”, Teddy replied before Harry or Ginny could. “Plus I don’t think that we would really fit. I mean, there are ten people living in this house already if you count the baby”.
“Which is where?” Ginny asked looking at Harry’s empty arms.
“Upstairs sleeping”, Harry responded. “So, isn’t Neville here yet?”
“Uncle Harry, he’s bringing Professor Jenks with him!” Hugo said.
“Really? He does?” Harry said at the same exasperated tone as Hugo. “Who’s Professor Jenks?”
“Professor Cornelia Jenks” James replied. “She’s our new Quidditch professor and Neville’s cousin, but nobody likes her because she’s such a big b…”
“JAMES!” his mother yelled before he could say the word.
“Well, she is”, the boy just shrugged and Rose, Hugo and Teddy chuckled. Albus however didn’t.
“Why would you say that? If you hadn’t abandoned our Quidditch team you would see how great she is”, he said.
“I didn’t abandon the team; I just couldn’t deal with Quidditch and the band at the same time anymore!”
“Oh, please don’t start that again”, Harry rolled his eyes. “You haven’t stopped arguing over it ever since the day you came back”.
Albus, who had his mouth opened ready to give James a retort, looked at his father shut it and then nodded. He had learnt after all that arguing with James never had a good outcome for anyone but James. After a few minutes and after Lily joined them downstairs, Harry and Ginny took Teddy upstairs to see the baby and the rest of them stayed waiting for Neville and Professor Jenks, while Molly was adding the last details to what smelt like a delicious dinner.
“Wow, she looks more and more like you everyday Harry”, Teddy said looking down at the sleeping baby.
“She can shrill as loud as her mother though, I’ll tell you that much”, Harry laughed but the smile was wiped from his face with a blow on the ribs. “Gin, that hurt!” he complained but Ginny ignored him and approached Teddy and the crib with the baby.
“What do you think of the name?” she asked him.
“I think it fits her”, Teddy smiled. “So, how are the kids taking the arrival of Hope in their lives?”
Harry laughed at how that sounded and then shrugged.
“James and Albus are constantly fighting about who will get to be her favorite brother”, he said.
“That’s an original! James and Albus fighting!” Teddy joked.
“You know they love each other”, Ginny said. “They just have their own way of showing it”.
“Kind of like you hitting me in the ribs?” Harry scowled.
“Kind of, yeah”, Ginny smiled and Harry grunted but let her kiss the corner of his mouth. Teddy laughed.
“It’s nice to see that some things don’t ever change”, he said watching them. “What about Lily?”
“Well, Lily is been a bit jealous”, Ginny said. “But I’m sure she’ll get over it”.
Albus appeared at the door.
“Neville is here with Professor Jenks”, he said and he run back down. Harry walked to the door then held his hand back and as Ginny took it they walked downstairs with Teddy following them.
As the three of them climbed down the stairs, Teddy thought how jealous he was when he learnt that Ginny was pregnant with James. It was because he had always thought of both of Harry and Ginny as replacements for his own parents that he hated the idea of them having their own child. Yet, James hadn’t forced him out of his godfather’s life, he just made it better and so did Albus and Lily and now Hope. And for like the billionth time since he was a kid he felt grateful that his father had made Harry his godfather and he could belong to this family.
Neville was sitting next to Hermione on the couch and next to him sat a young girl with long brown hair and blue eyes. She was chatting with Luna and Hermione when Harry, Ginny and Teddy entered the room, which oddly seemed to be emptied from the kids except Albus.
“Hey, guys! Merry Christmas!” Neville said happily standing up to hug them.
“Merry Christmas, Neville”, Ginny smiled.
“Hello”, the girl smiled. “I’m Cornelia Jenks; I’m Neville’s cousin” she went on standing up and shaking hands with Ginny and Harry. “I gotta say that I’m really thrilled to finally meet you Mrs. Potter”.
“Really?”
“Yeah, I’m a big fan!” the girl smiled. “You were the best of the Harpies by far”.
“Well, thank you”, Ginny smiled modestly and then winked at Harry, who chuckled and then hugged her waist.
“So, I take it you’re trying to teach our kids how to play Quidditch?” he asked Professor Jenks.
“Yeah, well, I always loved Hogwarts, so I always wanted to go back”, she replied.
“Yep, I know the feeling”, Harry nodded.
“But aren’t you too young to be a professor?” Ginny asked her. “How old are you? You don’t look more than twenty”.
“I’m twenty two actually”, she said. “Yeah, that’s the reason I can’t get a permanent position, I’m only a temp”.
“It’ll be a shame if you don’t stick around Miss Jenks”, Albus said and she shot him a smile. “You did a great job with us”.
“Gryffindor has a great team”, she said. “I think you’re going for the cup for sure”.
“Hopefully”, Albus nodded. “That is if James’ absence doesn’t ruin the team”.
“Oh, Al, don’t you think you’re overreacting?” Harry asked him.
“No, he’s not”, Miss Jenks said. “James is a great player and it will be a great shame if he throws away that talent”.
“What if he’s not interested in that talent?” a voice came from the door and they all looked back to James standing there with his arms crossed in front of him, glaring at his professor.
“You’re wrong not to be interested”, she insisted looking back at him with the same hostility.
“I am more interested in other things”, he snapped.
“You shouldn’t be”, she said and James grunted.
“O-okay”, Ginny said before the argument could go on. “Who wants to eat dinner? Albus go and fetch your sister and your cousins and wake you’re uncle”.
“Uncle Ron is still sleeping?” Albus asked as he walked pass James to climb the stairs.
“Always”, Hermione sighed.
“Jamie, can you go and get some wine from the cellar?” Harry asked him and the boy shot him a dark look but did as he was asked and left the room as the rest of them moved to the dining room.
“Where can I wash my hands?” Miss Jenks asked.
“There’s a bathroom down the hall”, Hermione replied.
“Okay”, she nodded and left the room.
“Do you care to explain what you’re doing here?” James demanded closing the door of the cellar behind him.
“James, calm down”.
“Cornelia, this is my parents’ house!” James insisted.
“I know but Neville insisted I should come and I couldn’t decline without him knowing there was something going on”, she said and James sighed.
“Fine, I guess if we act normal, they won’t suspect anything”, he said.
“James, if we act as we normally act then they won’t have any suspicion, they’ll be sure”, she grinned and the boy grinned back moving closer to her.
“We can’t let that happen”.
“No, we can’t”, she nodded as he walked up to her forcing her to stand against the wall. And then he kissed her and she was kissing him back and his hands crept all over her and she grabbed the front of his T-shirt, her other hand running through his hair. They kissed for a whole five minutes and when they broke apart they were both out of breath. She laughed. “I thought this was your parents’ house”, she said.
“I missed you”, he shrugged. She smiled giving him a fleeting kiss.
“Come on, we need to go back upstairs before they start wondering where we are”, Cornelia said.
“Wait a minute”, James said as he scooped down and picked up the bottle with the wine his father had asked him to bring. “Why did you have to bring up the whole Quidditch thing in front of my parents? Do you know that now there’s a good chance my father will start bugging me with it? Like having Albus complaining all the time isn’t enough!” he told her then.
“James, I meant what I said”, she sighed. “You shouldn’t have left the Quidditch team”.
“It was you who said that you couldn’t be with me because you were my professor”, James shrugged.
“Yeah, but I didn’t mean you should leave the team!” she said exasperated. “James, you do have a talent in Quidditch and I feel like I’m ruining your future”.
“Well, lucky for you I have a lot of talents, so my future is safe”, he said with a rather serious face as she followed him outside the cellar. “I meant what I said too Corny. I’m not interested in a Quidditch career. I’m more interested in you; so I think I’m gonna be a rock star instead”.
“You are so certain for yourself, you’re making me sick”, she laughed.
“Oh, so I make you sick?” he grinned placing his arm around her waist and kissing across her jaw.
“Stop or someone will see us!” she said hastily pushing him away. He chuckled and let her go.
“You go to the dining room and I’ll come in a minute so they won’t see us return together”, he said.
“Okay, Jamie”, she smiled.
“Oh, I can’t believe my dad called me like that in front of you!” he groaned.
“Come on! I think it’s adorable!”
“I’m adorable; this nickname is not”, he said and she laughed, walking down the hall.
James stood there for a while waiting long enough for their return not to seem suspicious. He didn’t care much if they learnt but Cornelia could lose her job if Hogwarts somehow found out that she had an ongoing relationship with a student, so they had to be careful. But he didn’t really mind hiding; sneaking around was kind of fun.
