He could try to not let his principles and prejudgments get in the way here. After all, he seemed like a cool guy.

"I'm not?" he replied, realizing it was probably bad to sound shocked. "Oh, well, I guess that's good to know too." He had to remind himself that such a thing was typically meant as a compliment and not an insult. He smirked as he looked up, having a tendency to do that whenever searching for something to say. "So how'd you two meet?"

He brought his eyes back down to meet the other's, his expression amiable even though he wasn't sure if he wanted to know. Why'd he ask? Why?
