This Jake was, like, totally hyper-alert, so of course Jake heard the footsteps, as soon as they were in earshot. This was perfect, now nobody could get in until Jake left.

chat, I'd say," he added, crossing his arms across his chest as he slipped his wand away. "We have business to finish up," the boy went on, taking on a more business-like tone, all the while the words he'd once heard the prince say rang in his ears...

Jake couldn't have anyone knowing. Kyle was for fun, Jake was pretty sure Abby was killed for interfering. Would he have to kill Helios? Or do what he did to Lawson?
Both options were very tempting.
