| and again x Chapter Eighty - Five Draco walked into his quarters to see Hermione on the couch,
“Hermione” he smiled and then added “…how did you get in?”
“Sorry, just wanted to talk to you… Gin and Harry seem preoccupied with each other, studying or the whole Ron and Amy thing… I guess I just wanted to talk to someone who wouldn’t… oh and I know your password being head girl…”
“Ok” he smiled and shrugged dropping his bag on the floor and sitting down on the couch opposite,
“Sorry” She got up “I’ll just go”
“No don’t, its ok really just a surprise – a good surprise” he added “I like having you round me”
“Makes you nicer then someone I know” she said with a little smirk and sat down again,
“You want a drink?”
“Oh … erm ok … what do you have?”
“It’s Saturday night isn’t it”
“Yep”
“Then I’ve got fire whiskey, butter beer, pumpkin juice, coffee, tea and water”
“How about fire whiskey?” she asked with a sigh “I haven’t experienced it yet”
“I have a feeling you’ll like it” He said with a smirk getting up and wandering into the kitchen, calling back to her “How you been Hermione – I know we spoke in classes this week but I never ask you that”
“You’re scared to ask me that” she said loud enough for him to hear,
“You scare Ron with out even talking to him; I’m allowed to be a bit frightened”
“You shouldn’t be scared” she replied as he came back with two glasses, “You’re my friend unlike him”
“I’ll keep that in mind next time you glare at me for making a mistake with my revision”
“I’m won’t do it anymore, I don’t want to scare anyone else off, and I especially don’t want to scare you away” She said and reached for her glass.
“Ron doesn’t know what he’s missing”
He took a sip and sighed sitting back in his seat comfortably, she raised the glass to her lips and caught the scent of the amber liquid as it burnt her airways, she hesitated and then drank the glass in a gulp,
“I think I like it too” she grinned and he laughed shaking his head,
“I’m glad, how about another and then I’ll cut you off” He downed his and then pulled out his wand
“Sounds good, one more then”
“Accio Fire Whiskey” he caught the bottle as it flew into his hand and he poured it into the glasses, before setting the bottle on the table between them,
“Cheers” she said with a grin holding the glass up in the air,
“Cheers” he replied and they drank in silence.
She put the empty glass on the table and sat back in her seat contented, he watched, his eyes following her every move.
“Hermione, will you tell me something?” He said lounging on the couch,
“Depends on the nature of the question” she smiled a little glancing up from the bottle on the table,
“I wanted to ask how Harry defeated Voldemort – I never got the full answer from anyone being in prison”
She sobered up quickly to reply with “I don’t know if I’m the right person to tell you, maybe you should ask Harry”
“You trust me, don’t you? Garry doesn’t, not enough anyway”
“I – I – of course I do, it’s just that Voldemort was a part of Harry, they had a special connection no matter how evil it was”
“Like what he and Ginny have now?”
“Yes, kind of but Voldemort’s soul was more deeply linked… it was a part of him literally, not just metaphorically”
“He had some of the Dark Lord in him, that’s – that’s incredible – not in a good way of course” he added carefully “I mean its just amazing that something like that could happen, I wonder how”
Hermione was scared of giving too much away but she said she trusted him, and maybe it would bring some sort of closure to him, he was a follower in the regime for a long time. Hermione moved in towards the table and opened the bottle of Fire whisky pouring two glasses. She drank keeping her eyes on him and he did the same his eyes on her. She replaced the glass on the table, sat back a little in the couch and started to talk.
“Every time Voldemort killed he – he cut up his soul – but it was only for important murders”
“What do you mean cut up?”
“The magical term is Horcrux, but don’t let Harry or anyone else ever hear you use that word, he cut up his soul and stored it in items – the diary your dad planted on Ginny for instance” she said that knowing that Draco wouldn’t know about the others and everyone knew something about the Chamber of Secrets fiasco. “That was a Horcrux; it held him in there immortalised as a sixteen year old”
“Right” he said nodding “and when you say important murders you mean like Harry’s parents” he added linking all the pieces together “But that still doesn’t tell us how his soul got into Harry”
“Voldemort did it without knowing, when he killed Lily and James, Lily died trying to save Harry protecting him, but Harry received the scar and a piece of soul as well as parsel tongue and the link with the twin cores anyway”
“Parsel tongue and twin cores – the same thing in both there wands?”
“I’ve said too much” Hermione cringed putting a hand to her head,
“Its ok, I won’t tell anyone – just wipe my memory of this conversation if you like” he grinned,
“I couldn’t do that”
“I’ll let you, its ok” he said sitting up and handing her, her wand from the table, “Go on” he added to show he really meant it
“Not it’s ok, just don’t tell anyone, at all or Harry will kill me”
“I won’t tell a soul” he grinned and she laughed shaking her head
“Your sense of humour is atrocious!”
“Says the girl who’s laughing at my joke” he grinned “It’s nice to see you laughing again Hermione”
She blushed and looked down; “I feel sorry for you” she smiled a little more unable to stop herself “We’ll have to work on your jokes before I leave here tonight” If she left here tonight she considered for a brief moment before readjusting her thoughts. He spoke and she watched his mouth move, his hands shaking slightly and his eyes down.
“You feel sorry for me…” he let the sentence trail into the air “I feel sorry for me”
“Why Draco?” her expression changed to concern and she got up and sat beside him, watching his hands twist anxiously around each other in his lap,
“After everything that’s happened I’m left with this” he pulled up his sleeve to expose the dark mark, “I did stupid things, I joined the wrong side and I should have died, I should have been able to give my life up like Harry and not be coward”
“You’re not a coward” her eyes traced the snake and skull on his arm “Yes you did silly, stupid and dangerous things but you did them to keep your life, your families lives, your forgetting you helped Harry get Ginny back”
“From my prison cell”
“From which you were released because you finally became the good person you’re meant to be”
“What about the fact I could have stopped something from happening, someone from being blamed for a crime they never committed?”
“What are you saying Draco?”
“I know who cut up Bellatrix” He said quickly and swallowed nervously waiting for an answer, a slap or something to indicate she had heard him. He reached to the table pouring two more glasses and handing her one drank his own in a gulp. She took one look at the glass, an uncertain glance at him and then downed the drink. Her thoughts racing and her heart thudding erratically were a contrast to what she showed him. Hermione sat in apparent stunned silence; Draco’s head was down his eyes on the floor. He felt horrible inside, the lies the guilt. He’d fallen for Hermione and nothing could bring him back from that.
She regained herself and he reached out to her hand, her heart skipped a beat.
“You didn’t want to hide it did you?” her fingers slid to entwine with his, and he shook his head his hand holding hers back.
“It was Scrimgeour” he said looking down
She looked up and asked “With that kind of a curse? How do you know it was him?”
“My mother found Bellatrix, she was in one piece, they reported her death to the ministry and they stole her body from a house in London that they’d been staking out but none of us knew. She was there in – what do you call it… in state before the funeral but they didn’t know where the main death eaters were hiding out. They made up those pictures Hermione, from Bellatrix’s wand they were some how able to see what had happened – he came into my cell and told me what he’d done himself, the great Rufus Scrimgeour leader of the ministry and was going to be the one to have the greatest victory over Harry Potter, he was going to put him in Azkaban and would I help him”
“You said?”
“I said no, by that time I’d already come to my senses and was working on going with Harry because of Professor McGonagall anyway or spend my time repenting in Azkaban”
“Why would he plan all this, I mean what possible reason could he have for wanting Harry put away when the whole wizarding world was against it”
“He’s a friend of Severus Snape, they can’t get to the school – McGonagall won’t let them especially after crazy Umbridge, but the outside world, he’s being evil in a lot of almost insignificant ways that will eventually led to him controlling everything, he wants Harry out of the way”
“He’s in danger again and he doesn’t even know about it”
“That’s why I’m so keen to stay here, Harry saved me, and I’m going to help him back” missing out the fact he had intended to go after Voldemort’s power himself but had changed his mind, he now knew how Scrimgeour might plan to do it eventually.
“I know and now Harry needs to know. We have to tell him” her fingers moved to trace up his forearm to the dark mark engraved in his arm, he watched them with baited breath feeling the burn under his skin at her touch,
“I should have done something, I should have said something” he murmured his eyes still on her hand
“No one would have believed you, you did it to protect yourself and we all knew Harry wouldn’t get charged with anything” She said reassuringly, her voice calm and protective of him,
“But-”He started nervously his eyes finally looking up to hers and seeing something that made him forget what he was going to say,
“I’m not going to lose you …” she hesitated but kept speaking “…because I want to do this” she leaned in a hand caressing his cheek, she could feel the air escaping his lips against her own as he moved in closer as well. They kissed, her heart leapt in her chest. This was right.
He broke away a little “Are you sure you want to do this – I mean complicate things between us” He seemed a little breathless like he’d been taken by surprise and she smiled,
“If I hadn’t have the drinks I wouldn’t be brave enough, just remember I’m kissing you this time” she smiled, and his hand moved to her waist pulling her in closer slowly,
“You don’t think you’ll regret this in the morning?”
“Nope” she giggled and leaned in kissing him softly “I’ve wanted to do it for weeks, I just never realised until tonight”
