It took him quite a while to realise that Truebridge had emphasised a certain word, and thus changed the meaning of the question. He was getting good at that.

"I..." he started, wiping his face and eyes with his free hand, under his glasses, and saring, bleary-eyed, at Truebridge. "I... I think..." Jake thought hard... so hard he was getting a headache. "I don't tthhhhhink it were..." he finished up, screwing up his eyes in confusion.

Hearing the answer to his question, Jake blinked a little. "Why?" he asked, by now more confused than upset. "Evvvveryone else d-d-does... I'm d-dangerous..." Jake took another calming breath, but his breath hitched halfway though and he forced back tears once more.
