"Did I scare you?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Okay, the last thing that he ever expected was for Jack to crawl out from behind a suit of armor. So he just stood there staring at him in confusion for about a minute.

"What are you doing down there?" His fears were all forgotten as soon as he saw that it was a harmless person instead of a an unruly poltergeist.

"Not exactly scared. More like startled. I'm tired after reading History of Magic for 4 hours." Maybe he was sounding a bit defensive, but he really didn't want to appear to be a chicken.
