Hogwarts RPG Name:
Arrick Melliv
First Year
Default

Arrick Melliv was down in the middle of the line, which gave him plenty of time to observe the Sorting. He jumped back slightly onto the shoe of the first-year behind him when the hat began to sing, but quickly recovered muttering something about 'convincing special effects'.

As the line shortened before him the scrawny redhead occupied himself with trying to find a pattern to what seemed to him completely random choices on the hat's part. "Like being sorted for gym," he muttered to nobody in particular. He'd never liked being singled out and divvied up into arbitrary groups of kids as he'd always managed to be the weakest link. He eyed the House Tables and sincerely doubted he'd fit in at any of them.

Suddenly and all too soon, it was his turn.

"Might as well get it all over with," he muttered again under his breath as he sat down. The hat completely engulfed his head and sat on his shoulders as he was so small. He scowled. It smelled, and who knows if they ever washed the dodgy thing. What if someone had head lice?

"Most interesting, yes, most interesting indeed," said the hat.

Arrick was convinced there was a speaker embedded somewhere in the hat, even if he didn't sense any wiring. Lots of wireless things nowadays, after all.

"I can hear your thoughts, you know, and this is most interesting indeed."

Like bloody hell you can, Arrick snorted cynically.

"I heard THAT."

Fine. What number am I thinking of?

"3.14159."

...Lucky guess.

"Mmm mmm, quite a difficult one you are, quite tricky...lot of brains, inquisitive, quite a temper too! Strong-willed, steadfast, fairly ambitious...but no, not quite..."

Arrick listened, unimpressed, as the hat continued to mumble and mutter to itself. It felt vaguely like being thrust under a head-doctor's invisible magnifying glass.

"...Well I could put you in Slytherin, I suppose, but you're not particularly driven by any strong ambitions..."

Being left alone is a right proper ambition, Arrick rolled his eyes.

"You've a good head for knowledge, you'd do good in Ravenclaw, even though you doubt yourself too much. However....I think the best place would be....HUFFLEPUFF!"

Finally Arrick could see the hall again as the hat was lifted, and frowned a bit in disapproval.

"But I don't like yellow," he mumbled (he'd always ended up in the yellow team in gym), but the hat and its strange little voice was gone. With a final roll of his eyes and a resigned sigh, he hopped off the stool and made his way to the Hufflepuff House Table.
