Compared to the present. The present, she didn’t like so much. It was new, changing and undiscovered, and all of those things made her feel increasingly uncomfortable. It was exciting, she knew that. The trouble was, she didn’t know that exciting was necessarily a good thing. The present whispered things to her that she didn’t want to hear, and lured her with promises of warmth and happiness. But she held back. She was scared of rejection, and scared of humiliation. The present made her uneasy. Her feelings for Lee seemed to be fuelled by the present, and that wasn’t good.
