59. Ignore
In the garden of her parent’s house, I was surrounded by the small knot of friends as we waited for Dora. Soft music started to play and I turned to see her float towards me. I was reminded, inexplicably, of a painting of Ophelia, by a weeping willow tree, her long wavy hair tumbling down her back. I tried to ignore the thought, so overly dramatic. But still the image persisted and now lines from Shakespeare, unbidden, sprang to my lips: ‘Doubt thou the stars are fire;
Doubt that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt I love.’ The painting mentioned is by Arthur Hughes painted in 1863/4,
The lines are taken from Hamlet, Act 2 Scene 2 by William Shakespeare. Hamlet says them to Ophelia, before all the betrayal, madness and murder really gets going and when he really does love her.)
