The one from this summer?" She asked incredulously. " Why would he keep that? I mean...why?" She asked, a deeply guilty expression on her face. " Elizabeth, I never wanted to write him a letter like that. That wasn't how I wanted to do things...but circumstances..." She trailed off, knowing it was a poor reason and not an excuse but it was the truth.

Then Mariska registered the other remark about the Transfiguration homework. It had been Vanishing Spells, she remembered. " An accident with Transfiguration homework." She repeated it, a confused expression on her face. " So...what happened?" She asked, almost afraid to know now.
Elizabeth wasn't entirely certain how to respond when Mari showed incredulity to the fact Robert had kept her letter, and it took her a second to speak. "Um, yeah. That letter," she said finally, shrugging a bit. "He tried to explain why to me, but I'm not really sure I understood it all. Other than he knew it probably wasn't the best idea, but that he'd basically been ignored at home and the letter did something." She wished she remembered more of that discussion, knowing Mari wasn't just trying to be polite or anything. And it made her feel worse to see her best friend feeling guilty, knowing how guilty she'd felt earlier. When Robert had felt that it was more necessary to make her feel better than worry about himself, not knowing she knew things about what had gone on with Mari that he didn't. her eyes went to Mari as her best friend tried to explain, and she just shrugged, taking another sip of her drink to disguise her pause. "Okay, but it probably wasn't the best idea ever, even with circumstances the way they were," she said quietly, not really wanting to reprimand but unable to remain quiet.

But then Mari had caught her comment about Transfiguration, and asked about what she meant, and she frowned for a second. She didn't really want to have to explain, but now she was going to have to. "Well, as you probably know, we were all supposed to find something in the grounds and Vanish it. And he was trying to Vanish a Remembrall we found in a clearing in the bamboo forest, but his hand kind of slipped or something on his second try, and he sorta ended up Vanishing the letter." She lapsed into silence for a second, before she felt the need to add a disclaimer. "It was on the ground cause that's where I had left it after he let me see it, and I think I made him feel bad since I hadn't had any trouble Vanishing the piece of bamboo I'd found, and it was all just an accident. Really." She knew she was dangerously close to babbling, so she quickly picked up her drink again. Especially since she wasn't sure what to say now.
