She said as they neared it.
When she had reached the table and she sat down, taking out her almost always present lollipop and popping it in her mouth before talking again. " It has been a while, and I'm sorry about that," She said a little more serious now. She sighed and looked over at Elizabeth. " I know this isn't easy for you, dealing with all of this...but I have to ask you how he is. I can't ask him myself." She said, knowing Elizabeth would know what she was talking about. Elizabeth shook her head, giving in to her urge to laugh again, at Mari's response to her exasperation at having been unable to find a table by herself. It wasn't like Mari didn't know she sometimes regretted taking after her mother as regards her height. But then her best friend had started walking, and she followed, speeding up slightly to keep up. "Well, you did find it," she said with a grin as they got to the table and Mari decided it would work.
Sitting across from her, she tried to not show interest as Mari pulled a lollipop out. She knew what it was, so it wasn't worth pretending she didn't. Instead, she took a sip of her butterbeer, and then set the bottle on the table. "It's okay. I mean, it's not like we've each been busy with things," she said quietly, before Mari brought up the subject she knew was coming. She bit her lip for a minute, glancing around as she tried to figure out just what to say, but ultimately decided to just be honest. "Well, he wasn't doing good. I can definitely say that," she started, before going off into a slight tangent. "Did you know he was keeping your letter with him all the time?" She shook her head to try to get herself back on subject, before taking a deep breath. "But I think something changed after a slight accident with the Transfiguration homework." She registered Mari's last statement, and wondered exactly how much the other girl had heard about.
