A glance at the table convinced her that Sol was still there and out of reach of the cat's eyes and, more importantly, paws. He was bumbling about behind a large candlestick, squeaking to himself quietly.
She'd just turned around again to stroke the cat's fur again when...
Kiri was aware of being pulled slightly sideways, and then Raiden was hugging her. The world started spinning rapidly. Familiar hot and cold showers criss-crossed her body. He was hugging her! The cat, pinned in-between them now, meowed in protest, but the sounds seemed to be very far off, sort of muffled. The skin of her shoulder where Raiden was holding her tingled like... Well, nothing in her repertoire of experiences could compare.
With a small sigh, Kiri wrapped one of her arms around Raiden's back and returned the hug, clinging to him tightly, her mouth and nose pressed against his shirt. "I'm okay," she mumbled indistinctly into the cloth. "It's just a bit much at once." The flooded dungeons, her lost possessions, the drenched robes... Kiri's fingers dug into Raiden's robes as she held on to him.
This was an odd situation. While his girl allergies were making his stomach do little flips and squirms, he wasn't actually uncomfortable. He actually felt a lot better than he had about ten minutes ago. He patted Kiri's shoulder and leaned his head against hers, sighing as Roscoe wiggled out from between them and curled up on his lap with a reproachful miaow. It was really a good thing that Kiri hadn't gotten upset over being hugged. He'd reached his limit of people being upset with him for hugging already, and wasn't sure if he could take it again.
"I know... But you never know, they might be able to fix it," he said brightly. People were feeling really down and shell-shocked at the moment, but you always had to stay positive, he reminded himself. Staying positive made everything feel better, even if it wasn't actually... "I'm sure there's some way of making it better... Books and stuff can be dried and things can be fixed, especially with magic."
Sure, he wasn't as confident as he sounded. But if he sounded sad and worried like everyone else, then Kiri would never feel better. And he didn't like when she was sad or scared or upset or any of those things. It made him feel sad and scared and upset and all that too. |
