Shaking her head 'no', the third year said, "No, we don't catch the nifflers... we just follow after them and collect what they find. They should bring the treasure to us."
Now where did her niffler go? Mariel glanced around for the creature she had momentarily taken her eyes off. Oh there he was, coming straight for her. Hmm, guess he realized that the third year had 'claimed' him. Holding out her hands in front of him, he spit out a few coins in her palm and took off again.
"Look, Sarah," she said to the Hufflepuff as she showed what was in her hands. "He knows he's ours. Let's follow him around to see what else he'll find." She took a few steps forward as she watched their little niffler dive back into the dirt.
Sarah stopped in her tracks as Mariel called to her.
"What? We're not meant to catch them first?" Oh dang, well that was a waste of time.Good job Mariel had already claimed one then because the one she released hadn't come back.
Watching with interest she saw a little Niffler return to them and hand over some coins to Mariel.Beaming at her friend she nodded too.
"He does! That's how many?" she asked counting the coins.
"7! We've got 7 already! He's goooood."
Sarah practically squealed as it set off again in search of more booty, with Mariel and her in close behind.
After several minutes he returned yet again, mouth full of gold coins. Sarah bent down and picked them up as he dropped them at her feet, before yet again scuttling off towards the trees.
"1.2.3.4.5.6......6 more!" She beamed, handing them to Mariel for her to put them safely inside the pouch.Don't want to be losing any.
