Melanie's eyes grew wide and she blinked in surprise at what he told her next. "You mean- You mean to tell me a perfectly healthy boy just happened to drop dead?" she asked incredulously. The thought of Set dead still brought water to her eyes and Melanie felt the smallest of tears prick up in the corners of her eyes as she felt that annoying burning sensation in the back of her throat, but she quickly blinked them away, not wanting to start crying in front of him.
The first year shot him daggers. "Knock it off will you? I'm- I'm just curious." Melanie, defended herself, stuttering slightly.
"I don't know why you're looking at me like that," Jake muttered, mirroring the glare.
"But don't, yeah? Don't need that," he added, shoving his hands into his pockets, where his left hand bumped his wand. That was reassuring action, and Jake looked right at Melanie.
Eyeing her as if she needed some help in the hearing department, Jake nodded slowly.
"Yes," he said.
"I am telling you that... As far as I know, nothing happened..." Seeing Melanie's eyes go suddenly bright, Jake understood what that meant and quickly took a step back, about ready to leave.
"Don't start that," he mumbled.
But at her next words, he became frustrated.
"What do you mean 'knock it off'?! I'm not allowed to be annoyed by the fact that there's too many nosy people like you around who want to know what happened when he died?" he asked indignantly.
"Sort your priorities out, Melanie! Your curiosity could drive someone round the bend," he added angrily, sure that this 'someone' was going to be him one day.
