Maddox saw penny, but wanted to finish his conversation with Elizabeth before he ventured over to her. He patiently waited for Elizabeth to reply to him. He was missing his Penny badly, and really wanted to talk to her.
Penny looked up from her book when she felt a pair of eyes on her. She looked up and saw Maddox. He was talking to someone else. She gave him a smile and went back to her book. She did not know if he was going to come and talk to her. She had not seen him in like forever and she was missing him.
