Winnie beamed. Neeew people! Someone who already recognized that they'd never seen her before! One of the important things about being noticed, Mum had said, was if people recognized you as someone new. An unknown entity. Mystery was something you just couldn't buy at Madam Malkin's. Just like you couldn't buy love or acceptance. Those were earned.
"Yes, I'm brand new here," Winnie said obligingly. "I was tutored for a while, which was terribly boring, and I'll be starting here as a third year. What year are you?"
Winnie's fingers were itching. She was fascinated by all the activity around her. She yearned to take notes, to study her peers...her mind strayed to the quill in her bag.
