Oh, and to distinguish between the three types, Parasitism injures the other organism, commensalism leaves the other organism unaffected and with mutalism, both parties benefit. Some people restrict the term symbiosis to only these mutually beneficial interactions, but it is more commonly used to refer to any of the three types."

This means that the Cardia Rose is dependant on another species of plants to flower, and survive even,"
she said, happy to actually know something.

Astrid raised her hand and said, " Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two or more different species. Sometimes a symbiotic relationship benefits both species, sometimes one species benefits at the other's expense, and in other cases neither species benefits. Meaning that Cardia Rose is dependent on another species of plants to survive."
"Very good, all of you. Two points. And an extra to those who mentioned the different types of symbiosis."

"Perhaps that means something along the lines of--you need two plants to make them flower? They don't flower by themselves when there is only one of them?" he suggested. Gah. Herbology was SO his worst class.
"If you have not noticed, there is more than one plant in each of the planters. Or at least, there had better be in yours. Otherwise the culling would not necessary."

"Now, the plants that we are working with are mutual symbiotes. That is, they require one another. What you will be planting is a much larger plant which must be surrounded by these smaller ones." He pulled one over, and while it looked like it could easily fit in one of the planters on its own, the recently thinned planters were still a little too crowded for this plant. It had tendrils which seemed to reach out to the edges of its pot, and straight stems which came up into flower buds.

"This is the Cardia Mythos. It will bud, but without a certain chemical which is secreted by the Cardia Rose, the bud will never flower, and instead wilt and die as it is. The tendrils will seek out the Rose and wrap about the stems, absorbing the layer of secretion. Once it has matured, it will bloom and actually nearly spray its pollen. This pollen acts as a strange sort of fertilizer that stimulates the Cardia Rose to bloom."

"As you may have noticed, there is no room in your planters for this plant and those that are healthy within it. Which brings up a new dilemma, and one that must be considered carefully. This plant must be as close to the center of the roses... the heart of them. So you must make room there. You will probably need to remove two or three plants, and even up to five or more. The question becomes, do you attempt to replant them, as they are still healthy, or do you toss them?

"Both are viable option, and you should consider them carefully. Remember that the ones left are the least likely to survive, and may become nothing more than wasted time and energy trying to care for, and could be considered the same as those you plucked earlier. But, there is also the chance that they could survive, and you would be throwing out a perfectly healthy plant. In fact, you can be fairly sure that without being pulled, they would survive. And of course, some are more likely to survive than others, dependent on the health of those left. Today, this choice is yours to make. Just make sure that there is room for a root ball approximately 12 centimeters in diameter."
