I always read too much into storys. In my opinion James is not crazy. He and Narcissa did date and he loved her. I think that the reason he said that it was a lie and all in his head was because after reflecting on their relationship he realized that she did not feel the same way about him. He was dangerous because her family didn't want them together, and she thought it was fun. Sorry if I totally missed the mark.
