HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN
School is in session early this year for Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) as the franchise pushes forward for a summer opening.
In the third of the series based on J.K. Rowling's addictive (and increasingly dark) series, Harry begins his junior year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry under a cloud of anxiety and paranoia. Convicted murderer Sirius Black (GAry Oldman) has escaped wizard prison and is heading toward Howarts, presumably to finish off what He Who Muct Not Be Named started 13 years ago.
The special-effects department worked overtime to create the Dementors, the dark beings that are sent by the hundreds to prtect Hogwarts, but who, like many a militia, are out of control. These emotional vampires suck every drop of hope from anyone in their shadow, so Harry and pals--Emma Watson as Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley--must be extra careful on the school ground.
Like the drummer in "Spinal Tap," the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor changes every school year; this time it's David Thewlis as the secretive Professor Remus J. Lupin. Michael Gamvon replaces the late Richard Harris as headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Emma Thompson joins the cast in the amusing role of Sybill Trelawney, a romantically morose profssor of divination who sees death around every corner.
Chris Columbus stepped aside as director in favor of Alfonso Cuaron, whose expert handling of "A Little Princess" in 1995 means Hogwarts will be flush with the magic and emotional gravity of childhood.
