:shiftiness:

But enough of this shiftiness...here's another chapter.

~*~*~

“Tailing me now, are you?” Malfoy smirked, eyes boring into mine.

“You are the most illaudable git I’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting,” I growled at him. “Why don’t you just leave, Malfoy? Why keep hanging around?”

Pale lips in a line, Malfoy watched me through the slits of his eyes. “That’s none of your business, Granger. I’d advise you to keep your freckled nose out of my business.”

“As a prefect, it is my business to rein all delinquents, such as yourself.”

“Don’t give me that rubbish,” Malfoy hissed, his face drawing closer to me so I could hear. His hand reached for my fist, in which my wand was grasped. “You know you like the attention I give you.”

And for a moment, a split second of a moment, I couldn’t say anything—everything seemed languid. The coldness of his hand rippled chills through my body. His tongue ran over his teeth, which I noticed were slightly pointed. The flecks of blue in his eyes seemed to jump out at me more boldly than before, and at this point I could feel his cool breath on my face.

My heart was thudding in my chest. “What do you think you’re doing?” I whispered hoarsely without much conviction.

Malfoy chuckled and released me, brushing his slim fingers under my chin. “You’d better behave.”

I glared at him and huffed back towards Ron, who was unaware of what was happening. He looked up when I approached. “Something wrong?”

“No, of course not,” I snapped automatically.

Raising his eyebrows, Ron looked at me with surprise but did not pursue the topic further.

~

That night, Ron came down with a severe cold. His hacking was loud enough to wake the dead. “Get him to the hospital wing or something!” a Gryffindor third year yelled, clapping her hands over her ears so she could concentrate on her homework.

“I was about to do that,” I informed her shortly.

After Madam Pomfrey gave Ron an antidote and prescribed plenty of rest, he was in no condition to carry out Head Boy duties with me. “You’re staying in the Common Room,” I told him, patting his hand. “I’ll be back soon.”

With a snap the portrait hole closed behind me and I patrolled the corridors alone. I was walking past the library when a flash of blonde hair drifted before my eyes. Malfoy. I drew my wand. “Don’t move—I have a wand. Lumos.” My wand lit instantly and the face that met me was not Malfoy, but Luna Lovegood.

“What are you doing up at these hours?” I demanded, though not too unkindly, as she was more or less a friend.

Luna sighed, and for the first time, I saw tears shining in her eyes. “My dad was killed last night.”

“Oh Luna,” I sighed, something forming in my throat. I wrapped my arms around her. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s alright,” Luna whispered, a few tears leaking down her face. “He left me with this, along with other things.” In her hand I saw an ornate and antique-looking wand.

“Ravenclaw’s wand,” I concluded with reverence. “Keep it safe, I’d say.”

“Oh, I will, believe me,” Luna said, stroking the wand, looking a bit more like her old self.

“You’d best get to bed,” I told her.

She nodded and waved blearily before drifting away.
