She flashed a smile at him and took a bite of her sandwhich.
"Unfortunately, I admit, I don't know much of you. I spend too much time locked away in my Department. I come out to eat only now and then, I'm sure you've noticed. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement is always crazy busy and now we have zee Quiddith Cup on its way. Ayiyiyiyi. It gets intense down there, I assure you."
And it certainly did. All the fliers flying through the Department, people running around all over. Goodness, it was a crazy place and she absolutely loved it, thrived off of it.
"Would you be allowed to have a seat?" the woman asked. "Allowed to take a break and meet your fellow co-workers?" Otis didn't exactly know how to react to her "unfair" comment; it was more his rule than the Ministry that he was constantly alert while on duty. At her invitation to sit next to her, he slowly lowered himself into a chair, sitting as rigid as he did when he sat in his hard wooden chair behind the counter.
"Alright," he said tentatively, his eyes flicking around the cafeteria, half-hoping to catch a little punk who thought bewitching the coffee to pour itself on people's heads was funny. And yes, he had dealt with that before.
"I've heard of your break room, mostly from the house-elves." The ends of his mouth twitched slightly as he continued, "They seem rather...insulted that you bake your own food."
He gave a nod to Sophie Wolstenholme, head of his department, as she passed by, and then turned back to Verona.
"Someone from Magical Games and Sports was in here the other week. Ordered a gallon of peanut butter-marshmellow ice cream to relieve the stress from the Quidditch Cup." His nose wrinkled at the memory of the result of the ice cream. "Bloke didn't feel so good afterward." |
