In this case I think the grayish plant had little sunlight, perhaps this too dried up the soil and lowered the nutrient levels the plant was able to obtain. The second one, clearly flurishing was cared for in just the opposite way, with plenty of sunlight, nutrients and water, hence why it's so bright green, tall and healthy.
