Chapter 41: Peter's Plan (Part two)

“How can you possibly hide?” Peter asked (he was really a very good actor). “No one has been able to hide from you-know-who.”

“With the Fidelius Charm,” Lily replied.

“Which is why you are here,” James began. “Sirius we need a secret keeper….”

“No,” Sirius replied.

“What?” James questioned.

“James,” Sirius sighed. “Really, how hard would it be for Voldemort to figure out that I’m your secret keeper? I would be the first one he’d suspect.”

“But Sirius, we know you’d never betray us,” Lily replied.

“Lils, he could imperious me or torture it out of me; it’s really not safe for me to be your secret keeper,” Sirius stated.

“All right,” James said. “Then how about Remus?”

“Where is Remus?” Lily asked.

“Oh, he and Vi went home after the meeting,” Sirius answered.

“Should we call for him?” James asked.

“I don’t think that is such a good idea,” Peter said, thinking on his feet.

“You don’t?” Lily said.

“Don’t you think he’s been acting a bit strange lately?” Peter asked. “I mean, he showed up a little quickly after Lily had been captured, don’t you think? And he never really explained to us how he knew she was in the hospital….”

“Wormtail, are you seriously suggesting that Moony has joined the death eaters?” James asked.

“All I’m saying is that he has been acting strangely,” Peter replied.

James simply shook his head, unbelievingly.

“I think Peter’s right,” Sirius agreed.

“What?” James said.

“You do?” Lily asked.

“Camellia died,” Sirius said. “and Remus shut himself up in his room for a month.”

“Sirius, you or I would have done the same,” James said.

“But James, we’re talking about Remus,” Sirius replied. “The Remus I know, the Remus I grew up with would have wanted to be surrounded by his friends; he wouldn’t want to be alone.”

“Maybe your right,” James replied. “But then who-”

“Peter!” Sirius exclaimed.

James raised an eyebrow.

Sirius whispered only loud enough for James to hear, “Peter would be the last person anyone would suspect.”

James nodded. “Peter, would you be our secret keeper?” James asked.

“I’d be delighted to James,” Peter answered, with just a bit too much enthusiasm; not that anyone noticed, though.

“Wormtail, did you manage to imperious Black properly?” Voldemort asked coldly.

“Errr… no my lord,” Peter answered.

“What!?! You useless filth! This was our only opportunity, and you ruined it!” Voldemort shouted.

“No, my lord,” Peter squealed.

“You dare defy me?” Voldemort questioned coldly.

“Yes, my lord……I mean no, my lord……” Peter replied shakily. “You see, I managed to persuade the Potters, without magic.”

“Really? Did you Wormtail? Well, maybe you’re not as useless as I thought,” Voldemort stated.
