Tia took the cup in her hands and slowly raised it to her lips, sipping in the hot liquid. She could feel her tongue burning and much of her enthusiasm seemed to slacken away, almost immediately – She was not used to drinking tea, coffee had long been her choice. She lowered the cup for a second, the bitter taste of the sugar-free drink cruising through her mouth. Then she drank it again, hoping very much that the tea did not choke and suffocate her to death.
She concentrated on the question that had plagued her most since a few days, though a week or two ago she could not have cared less about it. “Should I inquire after my parents?” she thought to herself, her eyes half-closed as she drained the tea. Trust her parents, whom she had not seen for – how many was it again? Oh yes, more than twelve years – to exaggerate their teeniest quarrels, yet she had an odd feeling that, this time, their disparities might tend to cause more harm than they had done in the past decade, or so. The letter that had reached her earlier today had sounded serious, if not desperate.
Not that she was in the least hurry to write back – It was her parents’ way. To pen down their frustration and send their daughter letters of fury and severity, to which she never responded. But maybe she needed to change her practice, at least for the time being – She was not sure whether to write back or not, and yet she wondered if she should not pay them a visit. She drank another sip of tea, her mouth sour with the unsweetened taste, concentrating on the question that tensed her: “Should I pay my parents a visit?” she thought with as much concentration as she could muster. Could they, in the present circumstances, need her at all? |
