"The shield charm raises a protective shield about the caster that will effectively repel any basic spells cast. It is pretty much invisible and can be easily permeated by any non-magical object. For example, it would block Expelliarmus, but it wouldn't keep you from being hit by something thrown at you. Why am I stressing that Protego only blocks basic spells?"
