Looking around the potions room Amy noted that nothing had changed since last year. As she passed Snape to get to her usual seat at the back of the room she could feel her heart thumping in her chest and was sure he could too. Potions class had made Amy nervous, although she wasn’t really sure why.

‘You were the one who made friends with the troublemakers of the class Amy, so you cant really complain…’ She thought to herself with a glance at Brian and Dan. Ever since Snape had realized that she was friends with the two boys who disrupted his class on a daily basis he had hated her. But when it came right down to it, Amy wasn’t too upset that he hated her because she hated him right back.

“Take your seats!” Snape snapped, walking to the front of the room. Amy looked up as Dan took the seat to her left. Feeling his leg brush hers as he sat down, Amy felt herself blush and didn’t know why.

“Today we will be making the potion known as Dre’Veis. Do any of you know what this potion is capable of doing?” Snape asked, his oily voice seeming to savor the name of the potion.

As soon as he asked, Molly’s hand shot into the air, hitting Dan on the side of the head. This was greeted by an ‘Ouch!’ from Dan and a few giggles from the rest of the class. Snape turned his gaze upon them, giving what Amy had come to call the ‘evil eye’. It was times like these when her aunts superstitious nature seemed to show up in Amy; all of the sudden she wished she had an amulet against such things.

“Mr. Foster, would you like to tell me what Dre’Veis does?” Snape asked.

“To be honest with you, sir, I just don’t know. Perhaps you could ask Molly?” Dan said, rubbing his ear.

“Twenty points from Ravenclaw!” Snape snapped. “I take it you did not read your 6th year potions text book. Miss Arbor, would you like to tell me the answer?”

Amy had been ready for this. Taking a deep breath Amy recited the answer. “Dre’Veis, also known as the potion of the soul, is a potion that, when given to someone, can take their soul. One might say it mimics the effect of a dementor’s kiss. However, there is one difference. A soul gotten using this potion can be stored in a special type of bottle, known as a soul bearer, and used or returned to the souls original body.”

“Miss Arbor is correct.” Snape said, turning towards the class. “Dre’Veis is a potion that is capable of removing someone’s soul from their body. The removed soul can be stored in a glass bottle called a soul bearer. Here is one such bottle.” Snape paused and pulled a small glass bottle from his robes. It was rather plain except for the top, on which a small yellow star rested. Amy smirked; yellow stars were very un-Snapeish.

“These bottles are very hard to come by because they are so hard to make. Although it may appear to be a very insignificant thing, don’t let the appearance of this bottle fool you. There are hundreds of complex spells upon it to keep souls from escaping.” At this, Molly’s hand shot into the air along with a Hufflepuff’s.

“Yes?” Snape asked the Hufflepuff, a blonde haired girl that Amy didn’t know.

“Do you have a soul in there now?” She asked timidly. Amy felt it was a good question and leaned forward to hear Snape’s answer.

“No, there is not.” Snape answered shortly, making her wonder if there was more to it then that. Turning to Molly, Snape nodded slightly.

“Sir, you said that ‘There are hundreds of complex spells upon it to keep souls from escaping.’. Does that mean that there can be more then one soul stored in the bottle at a time?” Molly asked.

“Yes, it does. No one knows exactly how many souls can be stored at once because the potion is used so rarely. In fact, before I was interrupted, I was about to explain something very important about this potion.” Snape paused for effect, and then continued. “There are many things you can do with a soul. One of the most feared is an effect much like that of the Imperio curse. If you have someone’s soul you can control them completely. Unlike the Imperio curse, you can not fight it. There is no release until you are given your soul back or you die.”

A silence greeted these words as the students tried to understand what they had heard. A moment later Snape continued.

“I tell you this information because next Friday you will be attempting to make this potion. I do not expect any of you to succeed. In fact, I would not be surprised if one of you managed to blow him or her self up…” Snape paused to look at Brain, who blushed. Last year he had succeeded in exploding his first potion. Whether or not it was on purpose or not, Amy still didn’t know.

“Your homework, due Friday, will be an essay on the uses of a soul bearer. You are dismissed.” Snape said.
Amy gathered up her things and headed out of the room and into the hallway with Dan, Brian, and Molly behind her.

“Homework already?!” Brain said loudly, startling some passing second years.

“Well, what did you expect?” Molly asked, clutching her books to her chest.

Brian mumbled something that sounded like tea and biscuits and Amy laughed. However, her laughter was cut short as Snape’s voice floated down the hall.

“Miss Arbor, Mr. Foster, which of you left a jar of spilled caterpillars on the floor?”

“It wasn’t me!” Dan said quickly. Amy glanced at him, wondering if he was telling the truth.

“It wasn’t me either sir.” She said.

“Because neither of you will accept the blame, Ill take thirty points from Ravenclaw to cover you both. See that it doesn’t happen again or it will be sixty.”

“Dan, how could you!” Amy asked when Snape was out of ear shot.

“I didn’t, but I think I know who did.” Dan said, with a glare at a nearby doorway. Malfoy stood there, an empty jar in his hand and a grin on his pale face.

“Ill kill that kid!” Brain said with feeling, stepping towards the doorway.

“No!” Molly said, holding him back. Lowering her voice, Molly looked at Malfoy. “We’ll get him back another way, but not here.”

“Wow, saint Molly strikes back!” Amy said with a grin, wondering if she was dreaming.

“I’m just sick of him getting away with everything, is all.” Molly said with a little smile.

“Me too.” Dan said with feeling.

“I think we all are.” Brain said.

Amy checked her watch and was startled to see that they only had ten more minutes to get back to the Ravenclaw common room to get their books for Charms. Coming up to the portrait hole for their common room, Amy looked at Molly.

“You know you guys should really learn the passwords.” Molly said with a sigh.

“Why should we when you always know them?” Brain asked.

“Good point. Alveadda.” Molly said. The portrait swung forward and they rushed to get their books. Meeting up in the hallway, they ran down the hall to the charms classroom to find everyone already seated. Choosing a spot in the back, Amy took her seat next to Molly. Looking around she groaned. They had charms with the Slytherins.

-I hope you enjoy the update!-
