Her confusion grew, and then he said it, and the icy sensation hit the pit of her stomach. She looked away, feeling her skin crawl. 'I-' she pulled back, trying to step out of his reach. She didn't want him to touch her, not now that he knew. Even if he could forgive her, she didn't want him to touch her when she felt like this, her skin crawling at the remembered touch of James.
'That was a mistake,' she murmured, not as an excuse but as a statement. She loosened his hold, taking a step away from him. 'You shouldn't have found out like this.' She still couldn't meet his eyes. She felt sick suddenly, and turned taking an unsure step away. Surely he didn't want to look at her. 'We didn't-' she stopped. 'I mean..' Her voice fell silent. It was little consolation that they had not done in the end what Cole must think. 'I'm sorry,' she turned back. She wouldn't run this time. She had done this. He had every right to feel betrayed. She looked up slightly, her eyes stopping on his chest, waiting for him to start shouting at her. To hit her or hex her, to do whatever it was he would.
