Jaren had almost instinctively darted over to the bottom of the stairs when Nadia tripped, then reasoned that Zekke was closer than he was and stood his ground. In any case, Nadia would be fine, and he spoke from personal experience.

The mystery of the noise was solved when Edgar the raven came pelting out of the door, swooped down and with a casual loop landed on Jaren's shoulder to laugh mockingly at Ying the hawk, who flew out and settled herself down on the balcony ledge and glared at the raven, ruffling her feathers.

"I suppose it's too much to ask that you two get along," Jaren muttered at Edgar, who only looked cheeky.
