Initially, Mairéad Scannell
suggested in the
Irish Examiner, that the Potter books were not suitable for children. Orlaith Ní Challanáin then wrote a
response claiming she was wrong. Sorcha Healy has now done the
same thing.
Quote:
Does she want us to go back to the ‘good old days’ when certain books were banned in Ireland as they were considered offensive to the Catholic church?
If this were to happen it would be two steps back in helping children to learn not just how to read but also how to enjoy the art of reading. This is political correctness out of control.
Quote:
To say Harry Potter is unsuitable for children is very patronising. Harry fights evil, but children know that very bad things happen in the world.
They are educated about the Holocaust and the real life tortures and horrors of the concentration camps.
