She grabbed her teddy bear and waited for the shopkeeper.

There came another ding! from the end of the counter where the cash register was housed, before Zeke sidled back down towards the measuring area and his next customer.

"Hello there!" he greeted her in his usual genial manner, plucking his enchanted parchment from the air as it zoomed towards him, and consulting the measurements recorded there. "Let's see what we have here... mhm... mhmm... excellent! I'll be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail."

He gave the girl a smile, then headed off for a wall of shelves, from which he took down a particular wand box. This he carried back, opening up the box as he went. "Here, now. Just take this wand and give it a wave, and we'll see what happens," he said, holding out the box to offer up the wand that was housed inside it. "Be sure to let me know if it feels right, or if you'd rather try another."

The shopkeeper's voice was a relief, and this young Fox-Matthews stepped up to take the wand with a look that said Please rescue me from my adoring family members who love me very much. While Charlie just a few years ago would have snatched the thing right out of the box, eleven-year-old Charlie picked it up gently with a quiet, "Thank you." He had manners now, you know.

Charlie waved the wand with a quiet but determined flick.

...

And another quiet but determined swish?

...

"That's normal, right?" Because his brother had explained previously that the wands weren't defective, and presently Charlie was wondering if perhaps he was the defective one. Please reassure him that he was still a wizard, Mr. Shopkeeper??? Thank god Greg had managed to talk his mum out of taking a picture of him waving a wand that was obviously not his own.

Zeke tried not to look too amused at the look on the boy's face - or really amused at all, truth be told, as some of his customers did not take kindly to that sort of thing - and simply smiled encouragingly, giving a nod of acknowledgement to the boy's thanks. Manners, always appreciated.

Hmm. So the first wand was not to be.

"Oh, yes," Zeke reassured the boy, holding out the box so that the wand might be placed back inside. "Perfectly normal. It can take a couple of tries, and plenty of wands withhold their magic completely when it's not a match. Nothing to worry about." But possibly that non-reaction could help them narrow things down a little further. Zeke considered his shelves again, then headed off for a different stack in a different corner of the shop, reaching up high to carefully manipulate one of the boxes out and forcibly reminding himself (as he often did in this process) of an old muggle game he once played with his family. Pre-wizard days, of course. Thankfully the stack stayed intact, with no pseudo-reenactments of that morning's catastrophe incident.

He returned to the boy, taking the lid off this box and offering up the second wand. "Let's see if you fare any better with this one."
