As the girl stopped at the door of his compartment and knocked, he looked up at her with his wide doll-like eyes, grabbing a chip from his bag and eating it. He wanted to simply watch her and wait for her to keep shuffling along, but he did feel a little bad to see her struggling. He realized he had some guidance in his hands, so maybe he should let the cards decide. He fanned them out, picked one and flipped it over. The Devil, reversed. Releasing old bad habits. He sighed and pursed his lips.
His eyes went back to the girl, flipping the card around so she could see it, then looked to the seat across from him and went back to practicing shuffling his cards. That was the most acknowledgement she would get on the matter, but she was free to sit if she would like. The butterfly in her stomach fluttered when the boy made eye contact. But when he returned to playing with his cards, it sunk. He was ignoring her. How disheartening.
Valerie took a deep breath, preparing to haul her trunk further down the train, when he suddenly looked at her again. She had no idea what that card meant, and was even taken aback that it wasn't a standard set of cards. She'd never seen something like that before....it must be magic!
She managed the smallest of smiles through her nerves as she dragged her trunk into the compartment, obliviously blocking the door of any more newcomers. "thankyou," she said as she sat down.
She watched the boy for another moment, then pulled out her book, realizing he wasn't going to start conversation. That was...okay. They didn't have to become fast friends or anything. She was just happy to have found a seat.
