He dragged his things through the middle cars, listening at different doors to make sure there was no one inside. One door even had a note specifying no one under fifth year was allowed, and he didn't even bother to try that one even though it was fairly silent inside.
Finally he found one that was unoccupied, and he dragged his stuff in and closed the door. He let out a huff, put his things away and plopped down on the seat closest to the window. Jane had packed him some snacks for the trip, so he pulled out a bag of crisps along with his tarot deck. He stole little chips in between practicing how to shuffle and cut the deck—he was still a bit clumsy, but had studied proper technique and was getting better. Every now and again a card would fly out onto the floor and he would have to go and pick it up. He noticed it tended to be The Fool. Interesting. It felt as though her heart was trying to compete with the train in terms of speed. It wasn't beating anymore, it was vibrating. Her eyes were wide and on the cusp of tearing up.
This was all overwhelming.
First, there were SO many people - it was a real crowd on the platform and a very cramped train. It was incredulous for someone who only just learned witches and wizards really existed. Children! In the hundreds! All in one place! And Valerie was jostled to and fro by strangers who were to be her peers.
Second of all, there was this trunk. So many thick school books (spell books!), a cauldron(!), ingrediants, robes, bits and bobs.....they all added up to a weight quite beyond what Valerie was independently capable of.
And that was the third thing. She was alone. It didn't occur to her until the train pulled away from the station, but she was flooded with the realization that she won't see her mom again until Christmas. Every face was new. She had to put her trust in complete strangers. And she had to make friends...
Could she make friends? Would anyone like her? Would she like anyone? What if witches and wizards were notoriously unkind? Rude? Mean, even? What if they all had some knowledge that she did not, and she was outcasted because of it? Because they did. They seemed to. Everyone seemed more comfortable in their situation than she felt.
Valerie drew a deep breath with every five inches she was able to haul her trunk. She tried to look for somewhere to sit by herself, so she wasn't bothering anyone who didn't want her there, but as she lugged the trunk to this compartment, she just didn't have the strength to go farther. Luckily, it seemed there was only one other person there. And a younger boy, too.
With another deep breath, she knocked on the doorframe and hoped he would allow her to join him.
