But... was this a stranger? No. It couldn't be. Especially when they knew his name before he shared it.
Freddie blinked. A couple times. His brows may have raised up and down as he concentrated on who could know their name. He knew this person or they knew of him. Maybe they were a fan of Professional Gobstones.. No. Before he could go further in this thought, he looked at their face longer. There were a few fainted indents in their face that were quite subtle on first glance, until he remembered their first year. L.. I..
Gasp. "Quinn... Quinn, it's you!" He was smiling already, but he began laughing in delight before walking over to give them a nice big hug. "I can't believe it. I have soo many questions. Like where, when, why.. But more important, how are you??" For a moment Quinn was a little nervous that maybe he was wrong and this wasn't actually Freddie, or if it was Freddie wouldn't recognize him anymore. When he noticed Freddie's eyes drifting up to his forehead he got a bit insecure—he knew the scars were still there, not noticeable unless you were really looking but still visible. But he didn't shy away from his gaze, because he knew if this was Freddie, then he would know what they were.
And he did.
As soon as Freddie hugged him Quinn melted the tiniest bit. He was feeling such a wide range of emotion from the day already—tiredness, frustration, sadness—only to then have it met with the joy of seeing his old friend, and then another wave of melancholy for all the time they'd lost from each other, Quinn couldn't help but be overwhelmed. Tears sprang from his eyes and onto Freddie's shoulder as he hugged Freddie back tightly, releasing a shaky exhale. "It's so good to see you." "Um," he said as he stepped back from the hug, wiping his eyes, "I'm—well—God that's a complicated question to answer, isn't it?" Quinn chuckled a bit. This is the first time they've seen each other in years, how's he supposed to just...casually talk about everything that's going on with him? Everything that has gone on? Quinn sniffled a bit. "I'm, uh, well, frankly a bit of a mess at the moment," he chuckled again, "but a little better right now, thanks to you. God, I've missed you—missed everyone, really, even the people I didn't like so much. I wasn't sure if or when I would see anyone from Hogwarts again, I'd been hoping I'd run into anyone since I've been back—sorry, not important." He waved his hand as if brushing the sentence away. His thoughts were running away with him again. "It's a bit of a long story, really. And I don't want to take up all of your time right now, I don't know what you're up to, but the short of it is that I was out of the country. Durmstrang, after third year, and bouncing around to a little bit of everywhere after I graduated. I only came back to London for the first time in December. It's—well, my mother. She's sick, and I'm taking care of her with my Gram. And my dad, too." The mention of his father was tacked with a cursory glance of frustration. "What about you, though? How are you? Where are you living, what are you up to?" Quinn was more than happy to shift the topic onto Freddie. A chance meeting in the middle of Diagon Alley didn't seem like the best place to unpack everything that's gone on with him. |
