“That’s correct, Miss Murray. Although their inclusion was somewhat controversial at the time as the family did not appreciate themselves on the list and spoke out against it by acknowledging their muggle ancestors.” One of very few who did so and were consequently labeled as ‘blood traitors’.

Had the chatter continued on for any longer then the seventh years might have been in minor trouble but as it happened, the trio hushed before it became consequential. “The Blacks were certainly one of the more ‘fanatic’ families and would’ve been extremely proud to be included in such matters.”

Mr Atreyu-Rehman’s concern for his friend was noble but Professor Fergersnout would suggest he didn’t let it disturb his own learning. “Ironically, despite their history perhaps suggesting otherwise, the Malfoys were not so fanatic when looking at the list of other names. They were quite willing to marry halfbloods and their tree still remain pureblooded.”

So she was quiet, unsure if she even ought to answer this first question but deciding that she must if for no other reason than to erase the stigma off her and assure her Head of House that she was paying attention. "There is the Shacklebolt family," she offered. "A descendent from it currently plays professional quidditch, I think."
Oh dear.

“Apology accepted” she nodded reassuringly to the Hufflepuff. She could assure the class that she was not grumpy but just valued enough respect from the students that they wouldn’t fall asleep on her during her lesson. “Remember my office door is always open.” Because as firm as she may have been, Fergersnout was also fair and warm and understanding.

“That’s right. The Shacklebolts were a respected family who held many positions of high authority but whose inclusion on the list did not mean they held any controversial views and who willingly ‘fraternised’ with all community members.”

At least this seventh year was alert enough to add to the discussion. “The Greengrass family were certainly included and eventually integrated with an aforementioned family the Malfoys through the marriage of two of their ancestors.” She expected most of the students to know who.

She was sensing a pattern with these answers. “The Burke’s are quite infamous around here thanks to the portrait of a former Headmistress Elizabeth Burke and she definitely has a lot to say for herself” the Professor chuckled. She would advise that anyone who wanted to have a conversation with her take whatever she said with a pinch of salt.

She was not at all surprised that some of these names might have been mentioned in these students' family trees. “That’s right. The Rosiers were related to a lot of the families on the list, the Lestranges, the Blacks, the Malfoys. They were highly regarded amongst their counterparts.” Unfortunately their history reflected this too.

Any extra elaboration wasn’t necessary so a succinct and to-the-point answer was what she was looking for. “Yes!” she smiled encouragingly. “A family with a more positive outlook towards the Wizarding community as a whole but who did not receive quite the same backlash as some of the other more accepting families, perhaps because two members were such accomplished Aurors that they were largely respected.” And rightfully so.

“Some excellent examples there and a few that have been missed are Travers, Slughorn, Gaunt..” She could continue but it was far easier to tap the board and allow the full list of names to come up.

“The original list of names were originally published by the Pure-Blood Directory in the 1930’s. The author was anonymous but it’s widely believed to have been Cantankerous Nott and displayed the names of the families whose Pureblood status was not in question. The list was subjective, for obvious reasons, and excluded many pureblooded families whose support of muggles was well known, namely the Potters.”

“The idea of the list was probably to provide a resource for arrangements of marriage, such was the considered importance amongst some some families to keep it ‘pure’. But why do you think such a heavy importance was placed on family and status back then? And why would that be so problematic now?” More of a subjective question this time but one she was interested in knowing the answer to.

OOC: I would give a rough estimate of a timeframe but my health is not co-operating so you have at least 24 hours
