Zeke cast a curious glance towards said adult, then back to the girl again...
... just as the wand was thrust back towards him. Her exclamation suggested that she could hear and understand him, so Zeke supposed he was probably dealing with simple reluctance. Or fear. That look she gave him definitely suggested no small amount of fear. "That's alright," he said, in his most patient, reassuring manner. He set the bond back in its box and put it to one side. Evidently, it had reacted in some unfavourable way, but he didn't really need to ask exactly what; the rejection was enough. "Sometimes it takes a few tries, but we'll find one that cooperates with you."
Zeke considered the wands in his shop for a moment, then strode behind the counted and climbed up his sliding ladder to take one down from one of the higher shelves. In a moment he was back, and again offering the wand inside the box, and tried for his best reassuring tone. "Let's see how you get on with this one."
He had another one? Rae couldn't fathom taking a second wand in hand, allowing it to finish what the first had started. Once was enough. Her own, accidental magic had never burned her--had only burned her once--and she'd never felt such vitriol radiating from within herself. If they insisted she go to school, the least they could do was let her continue learning magic on her own terms. Things were fine until the introduction of this whole...wand business.
Rae tried to use Mrs. Birch as a shield when the man descended the ladder with the new wand but the woman was having none of it. She forced Rae back to her earlier spot with the sharp insistence that she put off her nonsense.
Looking back at the woman, it was clear she had no choice but to try. Sucking in a deep breath, Rae turned to face the man who was doing his very best to make her believe he wasn't out to off her with his magic sticks. If she must face it, then she would.
She would go out bravely, ensuring none could say that in her last moments she, Ruth Anaya Elliot, had cowered and trembled. Though her chin wobbled, the little girl pulled for her bravest and most defiant face as she took hold of the wand. She braced for the searing pain but a peculiar thing happened then. Brilliant splashes of light erupted from its tip, swirling around the girl in a fanciful dance of light that mesmerised her.
Rae stood transfixed, a gentle warmth flooding her small frame and stirring an involuntary giggle. What a lovely thing. "Can I keep it?"
