Sydney’s grayish-blue eyes darted around the dragon daycare, taking in the scenery. Wow, this place had everything! Professor Paton had outdone herself with this room. She glanced at the dragon egg nestled in the basket in her arms. It seemed like Vox was taking an awfully long time to hatch. Maybe a change of environment would help him, but which one?

She thought for a moment. If she recalled correctly, both the Swedish Short-snout and the Common Welsh Green (the two dragon species she was most interested in hatching) lived in mountainous areas. That seemed like as good a place as any! She beelined for the small mountain “room”, setting Vox’s basket down in a cozy corner. She sat on the ground beside the basket, gently tucking a blue blanket around the egg. Her eyes shifted from the egg to the hoops hanging midair and back again. “Come on, Vox! Don’t you want to hatch and show all the other dragons who’s boss?”

Sydney sat lost in thought, imagining her dragon flying through those hoops and possibly setting fire to them. The thought made her smile a little. She’d almost lost track of time when a faint crackling sound distracted her. At first she thought she imagined it, but it got louder. She looked to her right and saw a crack in Vox’s egg. The crack grew, and an eye peeked out. Then a nose, then a silvery-blue head, a head Sydney instantly recognized as belonging to a Swedish Short-snout. Just like her wand core! “Hello, Vox,” she said, smiling. “You certainly took your time making your grand entrance, didn’t you?”

Vox emerged with a little roar, a roar that Sydney noticed sounded suspiciously like radio static. She held out a hand to the newly-hatched dragon. Vox blinked and toddled toward her. As he approached, he let out a sneeze and a jet of blue flames. Sydney giggled at the sight of the fire. How deliciously chaotic! “Good boy!” she said, giving Vox a little pat on the head.
